My Chihuahua has black bumps on its eye. What are they? How to treat?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I agree, that a meibomian gland cyst is the most common cause for Nicki's right upper eye lid mass. Most of these cysts do not cause a problem, though they do slowly grow over time. I recommend removing them while they are small. You can watch it for growth and discuss removing it will your Vet if it grows larger. I wish Nicki the best!

This looks like a decent sized mass. It could be benign and nothing to worry about or it could be malignant. I would talk to your vet and ask them to get a sample to look at it under the microscope to ensure it doesn't need to be surgically removed. I hope this helps.

It is impossible to say definitively thwt the lumps are benign without examining and aspirating the masses. If we obtain cells from the lump and they are non-cancerous, I would not be concerned. However, even benign lumps can cause issues if they become ulcerated or continue to grow. Discuss removal vs. aspirated with your veterinarian.

There is no way of knowing for sure without an examination though this represents a reason to seek veterinary care. This is usually determined with an examination and a fine needle aspirate (FNA) or a biopsy. Treatment depends on the findings up to that point. I am afraid that this red mass looks like a tumor or multicystic mass. This is definitely something that needs to be seen by a vet as it a) keeps your dog from closing his eye lid which can damage the eye to the point of losing vision (will dry out the cornea), and b), tumors can grow invasively, ie destroy the eye. Your vet will examine the mass, possibly take a little bit of tissue to examine under the microscope or send in to a pathology lab and then, depending on the findings, discuss treatment options, which could include removal of the mass alone (if possible), medication to remove it or make it shrink, or even removal of the eye. This bump could be a wart, a cyst, a benign tumor, or a malignant tumor. Any suspicious lumps should be examined by the vet. The vet can perform a test called a fine needle aspirate on it. To do this, the vet sticks a small needle into the bump to get a sample of it's cells, and examines the cells on a slide under a microscope. It's usually painless to the animal, and relatively quick to perform. I would take Pedro into the vet tomorrow to have the bump examined and diagnosed. Once it is diagnosed, the vet can recommend a treatment.
