My 2-year-old miniature poodle has gas and diarrhea. How to help?

My miniature poodle just started with gas and diarrhea. What do I do? He is 2 years old and has never been sick.

Toby is adorable!

As long as Toby is acting normal, eating normal, not vomiting and there is no blood you can always try boiled chicken and white rice as a bland diet for him. If any other symptoms develop or he has diarrhea for more then 2 days I recommend a visit to your veterinarian.

Dogs can get diarrhea for many different reasons. It can be from stress, a new food or treat, intestinal parasites, foreign body, etc.

Hi and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. I am so sorry to hear that Toby has intermittent diarrhea and foul smelling flatulence. I would actually recommend taking Toby to see a veterinarian to determine he does not have intestinal parasites. This is incredibly common in puppies and could be a reason as to why this is happening.

If he is negative for parasites, I would evaluate what food you are feeding him and how much/how often you are feeding him. I would recommend any puppy food from Hills, Purina or Royal Canin and feed according to the back of the bag.

After 2 days, you can put him back gradually on his normal food. If the problem remains unchanged, take him to the vet to get treatment.

My miniature poodle has bloody diarrhea. What should I do?

If Charlie has blood in his stool I highly recommend a veterinarian. Here they will look to see if he has hemorrhagic gastroenteritis. This can be caused by ingesting something that upset his gastrointestinal tract. At the veterinarian they can hydrate Charlie and give medications to help this resolve. Something most likely upset Eevee's stomach. I would recommend a bland diet of boiled chicken and white rice. If the diarrhea doesn't resolve or she doesn't eat, starts vomiting, becomes lethargic or you see blood then I recommend a veterinarian as soon as possible. My Shih Poo puppy had diarrhea then acted normal. Should I be worried?

Hello. This may have been a one off episode of diarrhea, only time will tell. I would stop all treats, table scraps, dental treats, rawhide snacks, etc. for the time being, & just feed his regular diet. If he has an appetite, but has another bout of diarrhea, then start him on a bland diet of 75% cooked white rice ( not Minute or instant rice ) & 25% plain cooked chicken or a little low fat cottage cheese. Feed this for a couple of days to see if the diarrhea resolves, then reintroduce the normal diet. If Paco stops eating, starts vomiting, or the diarrhea just will not resolve, please see your veterinarian for further diagnostics. Potty trained dog has diarrhea & accidents for 3 days. What to do?

As most of these episodes are dietary related I would suggest to start feeding with a bland diet based on boiled chicken and rice in small portion every 6 hours for the following 48hours. Then gradually reintroduce the normal diet over 5 days. I would definitively recommend a veterinary check up if the signs persist or you notice vomiting, lethargy or inappetence.
