My chihuahua swallows gurgling liquid. Is it healthy or diet related?

It sounds as Baby is suffering from a gastrointestinal condition, possibly an infection. it could also be due to ingestion of a foreign body material. i would recommend taking her to the vet the first chance you get, she will need to be checked first, if the vet thinks it's a simple gastrointestinal infection she will need an anti nausea injection, antibiotics and a special food for a few days in order to get better. if the vet thinks it is more serious she will need a blood test and possibly an ultrasound in order to find out what is wrong.

Continual swallowing can be a sign of something irritating their phayrnx, trachea or esophagus- like an object stuck in their throat. If you can get a good look in her mouth, I would check between and around her teeth as well as further back in her mouth. If you can offer her some food this may help too. If it persists, I would recommend having her seen as she may need an x-ray or other tests. I hope this helps!

Hello, thank you for your question about Coco. Based on the symptoms that you are describing I would be concerned about an underlying GI problem. Some dogs are sensitive to stress and changes in their environment, but I would be worried that an underlying problem is going on because her appetite has gotten worse. It is possible that she could be experiencing some inflammation/GI upset, obstruction, or another problem. If this behavior continues I would recommend having Coco seen by your veterinarian so that they can examine her and assess for any dehydration or abdominal discomfort. I suppose it could be mild regurgitation. Reflux is not commonly recognized in dogs but it probably does happen occasionally. If she seems to eat her food quickly or have difficulty eating large pieces of food I suppose it's possible that the smaller pieces will help. It's really difficult to know what this might be without being able to see Precious do it - you may want to try getting this on video since she has done it consistently for several years and make an appointment to show it to your vet.

This can be serious if you are hearing a gurgling sounds as she breathes. This typically is a sign of pneumonia or it can be a really bad upper airway infection. She needs to see a vet right away for treatment, which hopefully will be a short course of antibiotics. If the age you put in, 20, is really correct I would say that you should have her evaluated for cardiorespiratory disease. Mitral valve disease in small dogs is extremely common particularly at an older age. Coughing is often the first sign of heart disease that we see. Another structural issue that occurs in smaller breed dogs is called a collapsing trachea. A chest x-ray should be considered strongly regardless of the veterinarian's physical exam findings. The consumption of grass is often associated with GI upset or nutritional deficiencies. Depending on what the condition is, medications that might be considered are bronchodilators, antibiotics, steroids, and diuretics. I'd be worried because this can be a sign of something serious like heart disease. I'd have Skippu seen by a vet today for a physical exam, geriatric blood work, a urinalysis, and possibly chest x-rays. Based on the results of those tests, the vet can make a diagnosis and discuss what treatment options are available. I hope this helps!
