Why is my dog's front paw shuffling worsening after a recent incident?

This sounds like a medical emergency and you should have Puddin seen right away. The potential cause for her signs are a slipped disc in her back causing pinching of her nerves going to her back legs (Intervertebral disc disease), trauma, spinal infection, a spinal tumor or a toxin. The veterinarian will want to perform a through exam and localize the pain. They will also check Puddin's neurologic function which will help to determine if her signs are due to a spinal problem. If her signs worsen and she can no longer walk on her back legs, she may need an MRI or surgery. Please have her seen, good luck.

That is concerning. Dachshunds are prone to having discs come out of place in their back and press on the spinal cord, leading to weakness or paralysis. I would recommend taking her to the vet in the next day or two to be checked out, and try to prevent her from going running or jumping in the mean time.

I recommend that you have Sprinkles evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Likely diagnostics include radiographs. Treatment would be based on findings. At the very least they can prescribe pain control medications to make Sprinkles feel better. In the meantime, reduce her activity as much as possible as that in itself can make a big difference. If Scrapoy is having neurologic signs (leg weakness, knuckling, not moving the leg(s), walking drunk) I would worry that he is suffering from a slipped disk in his neck or back. The shaking is common when dogs are in pain and disk can be very painful. I would recommend taking Scrapoy to the Vet today for an exam. I hope this helps and I wish you the very best!

I agree with your veterinarian that the trauma could have caused nerve damage. Paws that don;t have the ability to move can be prone to injury and then amputation is needed. Nerve repair is slow. If you want to be as proactive as possible, I recommend to look into physical therapy for Scooby. A physical therapist will set up a multi-model plan that can consist of laser therapy, acupuncture and movement. I hope this helps and I hope Scooby recovers quickly.

It does sound like a back injury. If he is getting worse (meaning he started out stumbling and then was dragging his limbs then stopped urinating), the best solution for him is surgery. Make sure you talk to the vet about medications and the biggest importance is REST! This means in a cage only- no walking, carry outside to potty and carry back in. Thank you for submitting your question regarding your dog. I recommend that he sees his veterinarian. It is worrisome that he is dragging his paws. This can be indicative of a neurological problem. He may have damaged his neck or back during the fight. He may need x-rays as well as medication to decrease inflammation around his spinal cord, muscle relaxants and pain medications.
