Dog's broken leg misdiagnosed. How to manage swelling with a bandage?

Pet's info: Dog | Rottweiler | Female | unspayed | 2 months and 28 days old | 15 lbs

My dog fell on her leg 3 weeks ago. She has been checked by 2 vets and said not broken. They prescibed jel for inflamations and painkillers. She also took shots and tablets of calcium/magnesium zinc and D3. She didnt get better. Took her to a 3rd vet today who confirmed leg is broken and bone is misfit. The vet put bandage on the leg and said if we notice swelling we take bandage off then re apply. I am attaching her xrays. Pls need your kind advise if this is correct.

The image quality makes it very difficult to see the images in the amount of detail needed to properly assess them, but it does appear that the bone was fractured and is healing. The bone appears to not be healing straight, likely because the leg was not splinted when the fracture first occurred.

You should definitely continue to monitor the bandaged/splinted leg. If you notice that Dixie's toes are blue or are cold to the touch the bandage/splint needs to be removed immediately and re-wrapped. I would definitely having a veterinarian re-wrap the bandage/splint as there are special bandaging/splinting techniques and materials used to accomplish different things. Your veterinarian would be the best person to do this to ensure proper healing.

    Poor Dixie! I'm sorry it's been such a struggle to get an answer! It's difficult to tell - the photos are a bit fuzzy, but I do think I'm seeing a mid-shaft left tibial fracture with some displacement. I wonder if she may have simply had a non-displaced hairline fracture initially that was difficult to see on x-rays, which could have been why the first two vets didn't see it. Hard to know without seeing the x-rays they saw (I assume these x-rays are from the 3rd vet).

    Fortunately, young pups like Dixie heal quickly, and very often do well with a good splinted bandage. I agree with your vet to watch for swelling (if they left the tips of her toes exposed you can watch for her toes to spread apart, which would indicate swelling) - however, I would hesitate to have you remove or re-apply the bandage on your own. It is worth having the vet do this, as doing it incorrectly could lead to serious problems. Too loose a bandage will not stabilize the broken leg appropriately, and too tight a bandage will cut off the blood supply. Better to have the vet do it!

    Hope Dixie feels better soon - happily young pups often can heal fractures within 6-8 weeks! Good luck! Hope this helps.

The swelling is very bad. You are correct to be concerned. I suggest you get him back to the vet ASAP to have the bandage removed and replaced. He is a lot of pain for sure which is why he is trying to bite. The fracture is unstable at this stage so you can't just take the bandage off and leave it like that. The vet should put on a full length cast that incorporates the foot. If you don't get this treated immediately the blood/nerve supply may end up being compromised to the foot. This is an emergency.

Dog's leg swelled from tight bandage. Will swelling reduce naturally?
Check the temperature of the affected leg. It should be approximately the same temperature as the other leg. If it is much cooler you need to take your dog to the vet for a recheck. If the temperature is similar you can rebandage the leg, but make sure it is not too tight. One way to awoid this is to put lots of padding around the leg before putting the previously unrolled and then rerolled sticky bandage on. It may also be a good idea to confine your dog to rest. You may have to rebandage the leg as soon as the swelling has subsided, as the bandage will loosen up. If the swelling does not go down within 24 hours, you will need to take Sterling to your vet for an exam.

Dog's leg broken/dislocated, no vet access. How can I help it heal?
The bone appears broken to me but without an x-ray it is impossible for me to know for sure. Your vet should sedate him, try to put the bone back in alignment as best he can and then put on a spoon splint (from the elbow down to the toes) to stabilize the bone. My dog has a broken leg but won't rest. Will it heal properly?
With a broken bone, Biko should not be walking around at all. You need to keep him in a kennel to allow the leg the best chance to heal. He should also be in a splint, not a supportive wrap. He may need sedatives. I recommend to call the veterinarian and tell them what is happening. They can provide a splint as well as sedation for Biko. It will take 6 to 8 weeks for the bone to fully heal. I hope this helps and please feel free to post any additional questions.

My pet's leg is swollen. Is it sprained or broken? How long to heal?
In the picture is not great but that looks swollen. While sprains can swell, swelling is more common with broken bones. Both conditions are painful. I recommend to have Oreo see her veterinarian today who will likely need an x-ray to check for a broken bone. Just like with humans, some broken bones can heal with a cast but others need surgery. Broken bones typically take eight weeks to heal but will not heal properly without medical treatment. Best of luck and please feel free to post any additional questions.

My dog is limping on hind leg. X-rays show fracture. What now?
Hello and thank you for reaching out to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. I'm sorry to hear that Muneca is limping. Based off the radiograph, it looks like her fibula, the smaller bone in her lower leg, may be fractured. It is difficult to know for sure without an orthogonal view, but that may be the reason for her limping. I recommend restricting her activity to cage rest and leash walks only, do not let her run or play for at least 4 weeks to allow time for the bone to heal. I recommend having her evaluated by a veterinarian who can perform bloodwork and see if it is safe to prescribe her anti-inflammatory pain medications to help her feel more comfortable. NEVER give human pain medications to dogs as they can be markedly toxic. I hope this is helpful!

Should I splint my active dog's hairline knee fracture at home?
I would not recommend placing a splint at home. There is too much risk of placing the splint and/or bandage incorrectly which could cause long term muscle and/or bone issues if the bandage is placed too tight or the bones are not aligned properly. Also, the knee is not a very easy area to immobilize which is essential when using a splint. If you have not had Abi examined by your regular vet yet, I would recommend starting there. Your vet may recommend X-rays and pain medication and, depending on the severity of the fracture, a referral to an orthopedic specialist. I hope this helps.
