Is surgery necessary for my 4-month-old bulldog's fractured elbow?

My English bulldog jumped and landed wrong fracturing his elbow. My vet recommending surgery but wanted to confirm if surgery is route to go, or a splint will be ok? My puppy’s is 4 months old

Hi, it is impossible to keep an elbow still enough to allow healing of the fracture.. being a joint there is always the tendency to move. So yes I agree that surgery would be the way forward. Hope Rubble makes a speedy recovery.!

I am so sorry Bleu fell and fractured his elbow! Without seeing him in person or the x-rays, I can't say for certain a splint is a viable option. I will, however, give you my opinion on the situation with what you have told me. I would do the surgery. Bleu is a young puppy who still has growing to do, and conservative treatment (splint and rest) runs the risk of affecting the growth of his leg should it not heal correctly. An incorrectly healed fracture could be painful, and would impact on his movement. That would mean surgery down the line to fix this abnormal growth and incorrectly healed fracture. It's best to have the surgery done to ensure the fractured bones heal in their correct anatomical position, and so there isn't an impact on his growth or movement. You are certainly welcome to take Bleu into another vet for a second opinion, but my opinion based on my experience is to have the surgery done.

That looks like a pretty nasty fracture. My first recommendation would be orthopedic surgery. The surgeon may recommend plates or other devices to get the bone back in alignment so that it can heal. If that is not an option in your area, then amputation would be my next recommendation. Due to the location, a cast or splint will not provide enough stabilization to allow the edges of the bone to knit back together. If the bones can be re-aligned, a hobble can be attempted, but the failure rate is quite high.

Pomeranian elbow fracture 3 weeks. Will it heal without surgery?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Sadly that type of fracture should be treated surgically. There is are tendons that attach there and a tension band wire is needed for an avulsion fracture of the olecranon. I would suspect it will not heal. If it has been 3 weeks you should have another X-ray taken to see how it is doing. I wish you the best!

Why is my 7-month-old French bulldog limping after elbow surgery?

Koby is a cutie! Ideally he just sprained his forelimb/only has a soft tissue injury and will respond well to a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory (recent blood work showing normal liver values is usually recommended before prescribing NSAIDs such as carprofen/Rimadyl) for a few days along with activity restriction for a week. This conservative therapy may be chosen as long as the limb does not appear swollen, acutely painful, etc. on physical exam/palpation. Re-x raying that limb would be ideal to determine if there has been migration of the pins/a new fracture etc. but could potentially wait if he is putting weight on the limb/it does not appear swollen/ and he responds well to the pain medication. As he has pins in his limb, he will be more prone to arthritis as the years go by and would likely benefit from being on a joint supplement such as VetriScience Mobility Flex or Vetriflex for life. My puppy has a fracture. Can it heal on its own without surgery?

They can definitely heal on their own and they heal especially well with puppies. However, it may heal at an angle, which can cause a life-long limp and issues with arthritis. This particular fracture involves the growth plate, which can increase the possibility that it won't heal correctly. The advantage of surgery is that the fracture can be aligned appropriately, which will shorten healing time and reduce chances of future complications. This would not be an easy surgery though and would likely require an orthopedic specialist to do it; which can get quite expensive. If you want to pursue surgery, then it's best to ask your veterinarian for a referral to an orthopedic specialist. Otherwise it's possible for it to heal fine with casting/splinting and time. My dog broke their humerus. Is surgery always necessary for healing?

Usually surgery is necessary in order to make sure the fracture heals properly in the correct position. It is also necessary to set the fracture under anesthesia as the muscles contract and it would be way too painful and difficult to put the bones back in the right place with the dog being awake. It is almost impossible to put a functioning cast on a humerus fracture, which is another reason for surgical fracture repair.

My dog's X-ray shows fractures. What are the next steps for treatment?

I am having a little trouble determine what is going on in the elbows. It looks like they are both fractured if these are pictures of different legs. The pelvis is also fractured. Treatment options would depend on the current condition of the pet and the cause for the injuries. Pelvic fractures often heal with strict cage rest for 1-2 months. The fracture of the elbow appears to have affected the joint, and it likely needs surgery to fix or amputation of the leg. If it is in both legs, surgery to fix the fractures is the best option.

Bulldog puppy with broken elbow won't eat. How to comfort him?

I would call your veterinarian in the morning and let them know he is not eating or drinking. This could be from an upset stomach from the pain medication. I would talk to them about getting a different medication and schedule the surgery as soon as they can. I would also crate him or keep him confined as much as possible so he doesn't injury himself even further.
