My dog has a foot growth that antibiotics didn't help. What's next?

At. This point, I would surgically explore that lesion. There may be a foreign body in there, there may be a small mass or tumor inside, but at least it should be surgically debrided. Debriding it will remove all of the dead necrotic tissue. It should be kept clean by doing daily bandage changes and your pet likely needs a different antibiotic. If this was a routine infection that was responsive to Cephalexin, it would be better by now.

This is often differentiated by a test called a fine needle aspirate (FNA) which is a pain free, inexpensive and easy procedure which in most cases will help reach a diagnosis. Sometimes a biopsy is needed for a definitive diagnosis. I recommend that you have her evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. I am really hoping for something benign. The problem with a bacterial infection that does not respond to antibiotics is that the infection can spread to other areas of Zula's body. It will not resolve on it's own, and it can get worse. You can see if there is another antibiotic that the bacteria may respond to, but if it doesn't amputation may be the best option. A dog can live a normal life without one of their toes. I'm sorry, it sounds like you are in a tough position, hope this advice helps you :-)

it looks infected and like there is pus in it. If there is no improvement after antibiotics then he needs it biopsied or surgically removed. They can sedated him to clean the hair and area then see if there is a foreign body stuck in it causing the recurring problem or a growth. Surgically removing it can get your to clean fresh edges and ahead of the infection.

It really may not be cancer and it may represent fibrosis or inflammation and scar tissue. I think it would be a good idea to consider getting larger biopsies to see if the diagnosis changes. If it does come back as cancer, this could be removed. Even if benign, your veterinarian could consider referring Milo to a board certified surgeon to see if there is surgical option to remove this even if benign for quality of life purposes. If there is no improvement at this point more testing does need to be done. I would recommend started with an x ray to see if the bone is affected or has anything going on. Amputation is a viable option at this point due to lack or response and pain associated with this. If you are not satisfied with your vet it is reasonable to seek a second opinion with your medical records to see what other options you have to help Abby.

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Hank. I am concerned that his toe is not healing. Infections in the nail and digit can be hard to treat. Sometimes aggressive antibiotics are needed. I will usually prescribe two separate antibiotics for a broader spectrum of coverage. However, I am always suspicious of cancer when there is a non-healing on a toe.
