Is 150mg fluconazole dosage normal for my dog's yeast infection?

Hello and thank you for your post! I have used Fluconazole multiple times for yeast infections and 200mg twice daily is within the dosing range. I would discuss this with your prescribing veterinarian first before switching as different drugs are used in different circumstances. In my experience, Fluconazole has less side effects than Ketoconazole and I prefer Fluconazole. I do not know what concentration your amoxicillin syrup is, but if it is just a yeast infection, an antibiotic like amoxicillin is not going to help. Levofenil is a human product and has not been tested for use in animals, so I would avoid using this solution for treating Milo. I would recommend bathing Milo twice weekly with Duoxo Chlorhexidine PS combination shampoo until resolved. This shampoo will treat bacterial and fungal skin infections and it does so quite well. I would not recommend starting it without diagnosis from a vet and confirmation of the correct dosage. Bacterial infections are more common in dogs, so it may not be yeast. If you're seeing vaginal discharge, that is definitely not a yeast infection and you need to see her vet right away.

Fluconazole has been found to be very safe in dogs and the most common side effects are loss of appetite, vomiting, and diarrhea. Seizures are not a common side effect of Fluconazole. If your dog is healthy and took the fluconazole with no problems than it is unlikely to cause seizures in the future.

Only your vet can make the decision if it is acceptable or not to use Fluconazole with cetrizine with Bruno. Cetrizine is an antihistamine which is primarily used in humans, so it would be considered off label use in dogs. Because of this, only a vet who has a client patient relationship can safe if it is okay to use in a particular animal, and that is impossible to achieve this relationship via an internet forum. I recommend taking Bruno into the vet to discuss the use of these drugs together.

If you stopped the Fluconazole course before you were supposed to, then that would be why the yeast infection spread from his paw to his leg. It's never recommended to stop a course of treatment unless told to do so by your vet. I would take Bruno back into your vet today for an exam, the vet can advise if they want you to continue on the Fluconazole. Itching in dogs can be causing by fleas, mites, or allergies. If he isn't up to date on his flea treatment, you will need to give him a spot on treatment such as Advantage or Revolution, and you will have to disinfect the environment. Should he be up to date on his flea treatment, I would have the vet examine and test him for mites (skin scrapings) and allergies (blood tests) when you see him for the yeast infection.

I would not give this medication unless a vet has specifically said that this medication is required. In general, a mild infection is treated with 5mg/kg (30mg for a 13lb dog), orally, one a day for 2 weeks, where a severe infection can be treated for 4-6 weeks. Often you will treat 1 week past clinical resolution. However, as mentioned, this medication can be very hard on the organs, especially the liver, and should not be given unless monitored by a veterinarian. I would suggest calling your vet to ask about dose amount and duration, as they may be able to tell you over the phone without another consult if you call and ask. Best of luck with Isabelle!
