My dog keeps licking his red paws. Could this be a yeast infection?

No, I would not use these on Bruno. First off, it's not safe to self treat your animal, as you may accidentally do more harm than good. Secondly, the common meds used to treat yeast infections in dogs include miconazole, itraconazole, and ketoconazole, which can only be prescribed by your vet. Finally, there are other causes for itching and redding skin in paws, such as allergies, and the underlying cause of this behavior needs to be diagnosed in order to be treated correct. If you are concerned that Bruno has a yeast infection, I would take him into the vet for an exam to confirm that he does have one, and the vet can prescribe an appropriate treatment for him.

If you stopped the Fluconazole course before you were supposed to, then that would be why the yeast infection spread from his paw to his leg. It's never recommended to stop a course of treatment unless told to do so by your vet. I would take Bruno back into your vet today for an exam, the vet can advise if they want you to continue on the Fluconazole. Itching in dogs can be causing by fleas, mites, or allergies. If he isn't up to date on his flea treatment, you will need to give him a spot on treatment such as Advantage or Revolution, and you will have to disinfect the environment. Should he be up to date on his flea treatment, I would have the vet examine and test him for mites (skin scrapings) and allergies (blood tests) when you see him for the yeast infection.

Hi the main similarity is that they can both affect paws. However, hypercheratosis is not a fungal infection in can be genetically inherited and it is common in certain breeds such as Labradors Retrievers and affects the pads. Fungal infection is mostly found inbetween the pads and it is mostly caused by Malassetia, a yeast that is normally present on skin but that can overgrow in certain circumstances. To treat the Yest infection you could use a dog shampoo called Malaseb, or bathe Bruno’s paws in diluted Hibiscrub ( Chlorexidine )which I think you should be able to find in India too. Bathing should be done for 1-2 weeks twice a day in diluted solution of 1:20. Hope this helps !

Miconazole is an antifungal and would be effective against yeast. I would not recommend using any topical medication unless it has been recommended by your veterinarian. Clobetasone is a corticosteroid and would not be recommended for some dogs.

Hello and thank you for your post! I have used Fluconazole multiple times for yeast infections and 200mg twice daily is within the dosing range. I would discuss this with your prescribing veterinarian first before switching as different drugs are used in different circumstances. In my experience, Fluconazole has less side effects than Ketoconazole and I prefer Fluconazole. I do not know what concentration your amoxicillin syrup is, but if it is just a yeast infection, an antibiotic like amoxicillin is not going to help. Levofenil is a human product and has not been tested for use in animals, so I would avoid using this solution for treating Milo. I would recommend bathing Milo twice weekly with Duoxo Chlorhexidine PS combination shampoo until resolved. This shampoo will treat bacterial and fungal skin infections and it does so quite well. Assuming Bruno weighs more than 30lbs the dosage is actually borderline low, I personally do not like Fluconazole, I usually prefer to use Itraconazole which I find more effective and safer, but at this dosage you do not have to worry about any severe side effects.

For ringworm you need either Conofite lotion (Miconazole), or a similar anti fungal cream +/- an oral antifungal (i.e. Fluconazole or Ketoconazole). Ringworm can take 2-4 weeks to cure in most cases. Also shaving the hair around the lesions helps prevent further spread. It is also advised to was all of Bruno's bedding in really hot water to eliminate any fungal spores the environment that could re-infect him.
