My dog has fleas on Nexgard. Can I use Advantage II topical now?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Male | neutered | 9 years and 2 months old | 12 lbs

Hello, I have a chihuahua mix that has been on Nexgard for a little while, but it seems to be getting less and less effective. Now it's week after I gave it to him, he's starting to itch again. We have seen 2 fleas, so we are pretty sure he is itching because of the fleas. We live in an area with a lot of wild animals in our backyard. I'm wondering if a topical flea treatment may work better? Can I give him a topical treatment like Advantage II if I gave him Nexgard a week ago? Thank you!

Thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach with your question about Knuckles. It's not recommended to mix flea treatments together. I would wait one more week, then give the Advantage II. Until then, you can give him Capstar. It's a one time pill that starts killing fleas in 30 minutes, and it's safe to give now. You can give him one a day until you can apply the Advantage II. You will also have to disinfect the environment. Wash his bedding in hot soapy water, and vacuum the furniture and carpet surfaces. You can use a spray to kill fleas in the house, such as Indorex, or a flea bomb would work well to kill the fleas in the home. I hope this helps!
