My dog has fleas. Can I use Capstar and K9 Advantix together?

I have a toy poodle that weighs 6.5 lbs. She is inside. Only goes out to potty. she has gotten fleas. I just gave her the 4th capstar pill over the last month. Is it safe to also use k9 advantix topical treatment on her? If so how long should I wait?

You can use both products on the same day so it is fine to start the Advantix at any time. There are better products that Advantix. Top products for dogs are oral products such as Simparica and Nexgard. Top products for cats are topicals such as Revolution and Cheristan. There is also an oral product called Comfortis that both dogs and cats can take. You will need to switch all the pets over to a good flea product. Make sure to discuss these products with your veterinarian first. These products are generally safe for all pets but there are some conditions which are contraindicated for the oral products.
Cleaning up and treating the house and yard will also help but it will not clear all the fleas. The main control is making sure the pets are on good products. This is what will ultimately stop the infestation. Also remember every female fleas lays about 50 eggs a day and it could take up to 6 months before the eggs hatch. Therefore, you will need to treat for at least 6 months. Best of luck and please feel free to post any additional questions.

You can actually give them at the same time, they are completely different products that work in different ways. I also recommend you use a good household flea fogger and vacuum EVERYWHERE! Even hard floors. Wash the dogs bedding on a hot wash, and your bedding if they sleep with you. If you're still finding fleas after a week, you should get a better product from your vet - I recommend Simparica or Comfortis/ Trifexis.

What long-lasting flea treatment pairs best with Capstar?

Capstar is an excellent choice for getting rid of fleas quickly - it's very effective at killing any fleas that may currently be on the dog, but only lasts for 24 hours. This is why it's recommended to start another, longer-lasting flea medication at the same time, or else the fleas will just come right back. The most effective options for flea control currently available are K9 Advantix, Nexgard, or Bravecto - I would recommend getting one of these from your vet if possible, to start within 24 hours of giving the Capstar.

Can I use NexGard/Advantage after Capstar and with a spot-on?

Good morning! Capstar is generally thought to be effective for 24-48 hours, so I don't think you need to give another Capstar if you gave one last night. The nexgaurd should not interact negatively with the spot-on product or bath because they work differently. If you are having difficulty with fleas in your pets then you may also need to treat your home and possibly your yard. Vacuum all floors (including wood floors) and furniture and throw the contents in the trash outside, wash all pet pedding in hot water if possible and put in hot dryer. My cat has fleas. Can I use Advantage and CapStar at the same time?

Hello, yes you can use them together. Most importantly, is that you also treat your environment to rid of the fleas. You can use pet safe environmental insecticides, wash all bedding and clothing with hot water, and replace the vacuum bag after every use. Hope this helps and best of luck.

Hi and thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Sorry to hear about the flea problem. Yes, you can use Capstar with any topical flea/tick medicine as far as I know. I don't know of any that Capstar is contraindicated. Great question and good luck.

My dog is on Frontline. Can I also give Capstar or Advantus?

Either can be combined and given at any time with Frontline. They do make better, longer acting flea control pills such as Nexgard or Simparica that you give monthly or Bravecto that is given every 3 months

How to prevent dog fleas? K9 Advantix, collars, oral meds: combine?

1. You don't need to give Daisy a flea bath before giving her the Advantix. You can give her the Advantix now. I don't recommend flea baths because they don't work well and can be very irritating to the skin. 2. You do not need to use the Advantix with the Sentry flea collar. Using Sentry (which contains fipronil) and Advantix together should be done with caution, as they have not be approved by the manufacturers for use together. The Advantix alone is enough protection. 3. You can give Daisy Capster with the Advantix. It's a one time pill that stars killing fleas in 30 minutes, and is safe to use anytime. That's the only oral medication I woken recommend to use in combination with the Advantix. Don't forget to disinfect the environment as well. Wash Daisy's bedding in hot soapy water, and vacuum the furniture and carpet surfaces. You can use a flea spray in the home such as Indorex, or you may need to flea bomb the house to kill the fleas.
