Is there a flea shot for pets? What's the best flea prevention?

Unfortunately we do not have "shots" that cover all these problems. The only injections I am aware of that offer some protection are the Program shot, which lasts 6 months and will prevent fleas from reproducing but doesn't kill fleas on your dog, and praziquantel which is an injection for tapeworms. There is also an injection to prevent heartworms called Proheart that is once every 6 months. Most people choose to do topical or oral products for flea/tick/intestinal parasites. My favorite product is Nexgaurd for fleas and ticks, which is a chewable once a month flea and tick preventative. There is a newer oral product called Bravecto which covers fleas and ticks, and lasts 3 months. I haven't used it but have heard great things. For heartworms and intestinal parasites I like the products iverheart, heartgard, sentinel, and interceptor. They prevent heartworms and the more common intestinal worms, and must be given monthly.

If you have successful removed all the fleas from your dog, the next step would be preventing reinfection. There are a number of delivery methods for flea prevention. This includes oral, topical, and collar formulations. Depending on your geographic region and the type of lifestyle the dog is leading, some are better than others. I tend to like the Seresto collar is this is available to you, as it lasts eight months and seems to be the most effective against both fleas and ticks.

I recommend oral flea & tick preventatives. There are several brands, and all are effective: Nexgard, Simparica, and Credelio are monthly, or Bravecto which is given every 12 weeks. My top two are Nexgard and Bravecto. These are prescription products available from your veterinarian. Hope this helps!

It helps prevents fleas and intestinal parasites in cats. It is easy to use and very effective in cats. This is a prescription medication your can obtain through Jax's veterinarian. You can pick up flea medication from your vet's office. You don't need an appointment to get them. Flea treatment from your vet's office will be a better product than those you can buy from the supermarket. If your dog already has fleas, you can get Capstar. It's a single dose pill that works in 30 minutes to kill fleas. The next day, you can put a spot on treatment like Advantage. It has to be used once a month every month for effective protection against fleas.
