My Husky won't eat or walk, has a fever and cough. What's wrong?

Hi. Poor Rylee. The first thing I would say is that you need to take her to the ER this evening. Respiratory distress can be very serious. In Raley's case, it sounds like her kennel cough could be turning into pneumonia. She will need a good exam, and radiographs. That is most likely the issue and a common occurrence in severe kennel cough cases. Unfortunately another possibility we have to keep in the back of our mind, although rare, would be distemper virus. Distemper is a virus that affects a dog’s respiratory, gastrointestinal, respiratory and central nervous systems, as well as the conjunctival membranes of the eye. The signs of canine distemper can include sneezing, coughing and thick mucus coming from the eyes and nose. Fever, lethargy, vomiting and diarrhea, and loss of appetite are also symptoms of the virus. Let's start with an exam a x-rays of the chest a review of her vaccine status. Good luck

I recommend that he has a further work up if his original set of tests did not reveal an answer to his problem. You may want to seek a second opinion with internal medicine specialist. An abdominal ultrasound will be more sensitive to detect subtle abnormalities in his abdomen. I would also try to have his blood sugar measured as soon after an episode as possible. Low blood sugar can cause collapse. Feeding him prior to walks could help prevent this, but there is a pancreatic disease that causes low blood sugar. Do his episodes seem like small seizures at all? This can cause collapse as well. I hope this information helps and you can get some answers soon.

I would recommend bringing Onyx to your veterinarian. He is going to need supportive care including fluids and medication. He may need diagnostics including x-rays looking for a foreign body or blood work looking for pancreatitis. I would not wait much longer to bring him to the vet so he doesn't get any worse. There are too many causes to list that can make a dog vomit and not eat, but many can be serious. Panting in dogs is often a sign of pain or discomfort. When you take Lucky to the vet, be ready to answer questions about his regular diet, if he has eaten anything abnormal lately, does he chew on items, exposure to poisons or chemicals. As much information as you know about these things can help your vet narrow down possible causes for Lucky's illness.
