How long should my dog fast before X-rays? Can he have water?

Hi there! Phew Eazie had a big procedure done today. If the vet office is still open, give them a quick call because they know the specifics of his surgery. If they are already closed, in general what I recommend is to offer water ( small amounts at first) over night, and then as long as he's not vomiting, you can start introducing a little food in the morning. I also suggest starting feeding with a gentle bland food such as cooked boneless chicken breast or a commercial prescription food like hill's i/d. I hope he makes a full recovery!

Yes you can feed your dog normally if you are just taking him to the vet for a check up. If you are going to have a blood test, or a procedure that requires sedation or anaesthetic, then he should be starved but I think they would have informed you beforehand. Don't feed her after midnight the night before you travel. Take up the water that morning and walk her just before you go to the airport and before you board or load her (if possible). When you get to your destination, wait an hour or two then feed and water half what you normally offer. Feed the remainder after an hour if there is no vomiting. This can happen with travel.

There are a few tests that require testing but most do not. A basic panel of bloodwork just as a routine screening does not typically require fasting. If she needed to be fasted your vet probably would have let you know. Hope this helps. Best wishes.

Your veterinarian may have recommended to hold off food for a little bit to reduce the risk of her vomiting it back up. I would contact them to clarify the timeline that they recommended these things. Generally, withholding food for 8-12 hours is sufficient. Also, we do not generally recommend preventing dogs from drinking water. I would allow her access to water, and call your veterinarian to have them clarify why and for how long they don't want Luna to have food. I hope this is helpful!

Hello. It never hurts to do a small fast to help settle the stomach. 12 hours should be fine & then re-introduce food slowly, maybe 1/3 of the ration followed several hours later by another 1/3 & remainder in the evening.
