Is it safe to feed my dog before a routine vet visit or check-up?

There are a few tests that require testing but most do not. A basic panel of bloodwork just as a routine screening does not typically require fasting. If she needed to be fasted your vet probably would have let you know. Hope this helps. Best wishes.

It really depends on the exact blood work that is being done. If it is just a routine CBC and Chemistry profile then he probably doesn't need to be fasted. If the blood-work is being done the same day as the procedure then he should be fasted because of the procedure. You should probably call your vet for specific instructions. I am sure it is worrisome to put your dog under anesthesia but the benefits of cleaning the teeth and extracting the diseased teeth outweighs the risks of the anesthesia. As long as he is healthy, the risk is minimal.

This is a great question! Pre-operative blood work can be helpful even for procedures that really need to be done, because it allows your veterinarian to adjust their anesthetic plan if needed - for a kidney or liver problem, for example, that might show up on lab work. Some dogs may need reduced doses of certain drugs, or may have health issues that would require IV fluids for an extended period of time prior the procedure. Pepto-Bismol is generally safe for dogs and should not cause any harm, but it may not help much - in my experience, it isn't usually very effective for vomiting in dogs. You can try withholding food for the next 12 hours to give her stomach a chance to settle, then feed a bland diet of plain boiled chicken and rice until you are able to see the vet. As long as he is behaving normally, you can offer 1/4 of his meal and a 1/4 cup of water. Soak the food first to soften it in case his teeth and mouth are still sensitive. He likely received IV fluids during the procedure, so dehydration should not be a concern. You can probably feed him normally tomorrow.

I do not typically with hold water from my patients, but everyone has different preferences and it could be based on the procedure planned as well. I would go ahead and pick up the food and water tonight before bed and then call the office tomorrow morning for further clarification. if they allow you to offer water then you could do so at that time. Thank you for contacting Pet Coach with your question about Charlie. I would not feed him breakfast in the morning until after his blood is drawn. Samples can be too fatty if the blood is taken too soon after a meal. He can have water, but hold off on feeding him in the morning. I hope this helps!

If he isn’t vomiting or having diarrhea and he isn’t lethargic, I am not concerned about the short time he hasn’t eaten. Dogs can go several days without eating and be ok. I would leave him alone and offer him another meal at the next feeding time. If he still won’t eat in 24 hours, or he is vomiting or having diarrhea, I would contact a vet.
