Why is my dog's face still swollen and bumpy after vet treatment?

If the Benadryl was effective, I would have expected to see a reduction in the swelling by now. Sometimes allergic reactions require stronger drugs to treat such a steroids, and it sounds like this may be the cause for Moose. Because the swelling hasn't reduced and the reaction appears to be progressing, it's time to see a vet immediately. Please take him into an ER vet clinic if your regular vet is closed; if there isn't one in your area, there will be a vet on call for emergencies. Poor Blue! That is quite a swollen face :-( It's a bit unclear what the question is here, but a swollen face is usually a sign of an allergic reaction, and it's typical to treat with antihistamines and/or steroids, so it sounds like your vet is on track. Most allergic reactions resolve within a few hours, but I have seen cases have symptoms continue to return like you're seeing with Blue as the medications wear off, sometimes up to nearly a week. It sounds like you're doing everything right continuing to bring her in so the vet can respond to the symptoms as they happen - I understand it's frustrating! Hopefully it resolves soon. I would be hesitant to link her current symptoms to the spay, since allergic reactions usually occur much faster, and if her swelling started 4 days after her spay, that seems unlikely to be related. She may have been stung by a bee or had an insect bite that triggered it - but you vet may discuss altering her medications if they think there might be an association. I would guess she's being exposed to something that is still causing an allergic reactions. Unfortunately, this could be anything from food to fabric softener. Before changing everything, I would recommend to take her back into her vet and likely put her back on steroids and for a longer course. Sometimes the immune system can be stubborn to calm down. Take a photographs of your old food ingredients as well as your new food ingredients for comparison. I would recommend ruling out diet issues first if the allergic reaction comes back for a 3rd time. Hi and thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Sorry to hear about Lilith. Wow, how odd. It would be nice to know what the injection was that she received. I can only guess that it's a shot of benadryl (diphenhydramine) or some form of cortisone. This is an odd case. I would start to wonder about some type of allergic reaction to something in her environment or some food ingredient that she is consuming. Insect bites/stings or some environmental allergen could be the cause or some ingredient in her food. Other possibilities include some type of infection that keeps moving around but honestly I have not seen anything like this before with this kind of history and presentation. I'm not sure how they are treating this and that would help to offer some suggestions. If the injections aren't working by themselves, maybe she needs a combination of drugs given and very close monitoring. Dogs airways rarely swell with allergic reactions unless they receive some trauma to the neck or if a venomous snake bites them over the neck region. Otherwise I wouldn't expect swelling of the throat but this could progress to that. I would be trying antibiotics, steroids, anti histamines, possibly some Apoquel (for allergies), fish oil, turmeric, cumin, and boswellia (all of these spices are anti inflammatory) I would also put her on a bland diet right now of only boiled chicken/rotisserie chicken with white rice mixed 50:50 just in case it's something in her diet. But if she has developed a chicken allergy, you would have to look at a limited ingredient diet which has another protein source. I would question you on what is different in her environment- new products used for laundry, cleaning, carpet powders, treatments done in the home, remodeling projects in the home, different pet products tried or pet treats, etc. Good luck with this interesting yet troubling case. If your vet cannot solve the puzzle, consider a referral to a dermatologist and see if they can sort it out.

I do not recommend you give him those pills as they are unlikely to help. There is no way of knowing for sure without an examination though this represents a reason to seek veterinary care. This is usually determined with an examination and a fine needle aspirate (FNA) or a biopsy. Treatment depends on the findings up to that point. Thank you for submitting your question regarding Kyle. You are giving Benadryl plus Congestion. Unless specifically directed to do so by his veterinarian, I would stop this medication. He should be receiving just Benadryl which contains only diphenhydramine. Some dogs will require ongoing doses of steroids to keep the swelling down in the days following the reaction. His veterinarian may prescribe an antibiotic for the wounds that have started as well. I recommend contacting his veterinarian and see if a recheck appointment is necessary to discuss his medication. This is possibly due to an allergic reaction or it could even be an actual on going allergy to something like fleas, food or an allergen in the environment. Allergic reactions are usually treated with anti-histamine medications such as Benadryl and steroids. Cameron should be evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. They could start therapy for this to see if it improves. In most cases it does improve and resolve and if no further exposures to the antigen occur, then this would not recur.
