Why are my dog's eyes cloudy or greyish-blue? What should I do?

Poor Hurah! I can't see his eye very well in this photo, but any cloudiness is always cause for concern. Depending on the specific part of the eye that looks cloudy, this could be caused by glaucoma, a corneal scratch or ulcer, a severe eye infection, or cataracts. I would definitely recommend taking Hurah in to see a vet as soon as you are able to. He/she can examine the eye using a special stain if needed to help diagnose the problem and get him started on appropriate treatment.

Cloudiness in a two-year-old dog’s eyes is unusual. There can be many causes for cloudiness, from diseases that affect the lens of the eye to diseases that affect the cornea. Poor Shelby! Unfortunately, the photos here are quite blurry so it's hard to see exactly what's going on. You're right that glaucoma is a common cause of a milky "film" on the surface of the eye. Other possibilities would include localized corneal edema due to a corneal scratch or ulcer, or even some type of corneal dystrophy (mineralization or fat deposits in the cornea). Eye problems should always be seen and treated the same day, if possible, since in some cases waiting can lead to permanent damage or vision loss. So if you can, I would recommend taking Shelby to an emergency vet today for an exam. The vet there can take a close look at her eye with a bright light in a dark room, and may also use a special stain if needed to help diagnose the problem.

It sounds like your dog may have cataracts, which can occur as dog’s age or with diseases like Diabetes. If this change has occurred suddenly I would recommend having Coco checked out as soon as possible. If it has been a gradual change it is probably less concerning. I hope this helps. Hello, and thank you for your question. Monty's eye looks very concerning for possible glaucoma, uveitis (eye inflammation), or endothelial disease. I would strongly recommend getting him seen by the vet as soon as possible, as there is a risk of perforation of the eye if this is due to glaucoma. The vet can check the pressures inside the eye, and prescribe medications to help reduce pressure or inflammation. In the meantime, ensure that Monty does not scratch or rub his eye as it is very sensitive and may be prone to being perforated. An e-collar (cone) may help with this purpose. Cloudy eyes should always constitute an emergency vet visit. Since you know there is possible trauma, there could be an abrasion or corneal ulcer, something stuck under an eyelid, a hole in the cornea, or severe inflammation. There are several eye tests the vet may recommend after examining the eye to determine the most appropriate treatment.

I am sorry to hear about your dog. I would recommend taking him in to the vet as soon as possible, including the emergency vet if your vet isn't open. This could be corneal edema or a corneal ulceration. We could also possibly have trauma within the eye that we cannot see due to the cloudiness of the cornea, such as bleeding of retinal vessels or trauma to the optic nerve and the earlier the eye is treated the better the chance of healing and preserving vision.
