Dog eye ulcer surgery: When do stitches come out? E-collar tips?

I am sorry to hear about Luna. Unfortunately every corneal ulcer progresses differently and we cannot really predict how rapidly they will heal, particularly without seeing the eye in person as photos of eyes are very difficult to interpret. Normally with corneal ulcers I like to recheck them in a week or earlier if I feel they are bad or the pet seems increasingly uncomfortable. Some ulcers will heal within a week while others take much longer and make require advanced treatments. I would recommend calling your vet to see if Luna should be rechecked and leaving her cone on until your vet has confirmed it is ok to take it off. Best of luck to you and Luna.

It could be discomfort from the sutures. It also likely feels weird to Taurie to have her eyelid tacked down. Make sure she is wearing an Ecollar so she doesn't rub her eye and interrupt the healing.

Hi there! I would recommend asking the vet who did his surgery how long you should leave the cone on. For my neuter patients, if absorbable sutures have been used for skin closure, I normally tell clients they can remove the cone after 10-14 days since the incision should be healed by then. Poor girl. In uncomplicated cases of an eye ulcer the pet normally starts to improve significantly after 7 days. I would have her seen again my your vet soon. The eye ulcer this time around may be deeper or perhaps even resistant to the antibiotic. Sometimes pets also require surgical procedures on the eye to get the ulcer to heal. Steroid treatment can cause worsening of the eye ulcer and are usually not used in these cases. Some pics of the eye and more detailed informations of the problem are needed to be able to give you specific answers.

Poor Gizmo! Unfortunately, he truly does need to wear his E-collar at all times to prevent damaging his cornea further. If he scratches his eye, he can tear the cornea completely, causing permanent vision loss and an even more painful ulcer. If his cone is not comfortably for him, you can get him a donut shaped pillow that would also go around his neck, but allow him to eat/drink.

It depends if the dead eye continues to suffer from an active infection, if it does it is advised to have the eye removed, if the eye is not painful and doesn't have an active infection most of the time then the eye does not have to be removed.
