My dog's eye ulcer from stitches: Can it heal despite steroid use?

Poor Beaudreax! He could have a problem with his other eye causing it to squint, like an ulcer as well or an infection. No, oral prednisone will not help his eye ulcer, nor will Ciprofloaxin drops. Treating an ulcer requires a specific topical eye specific medication which can only be prescribed by the vet. I would see if you can borrow money from family and friends to afford the vet, and I can give you some resources that may help. You can see if your vet accepts payment plans, if there is a low cost clinic in your area, or you can apply for Care Credit online. There is also an organization called Red Rover that give grants for treatment of sick animals, and you can see if you qualify for one of their grants. The main reason is that the topical (to put in the eye) prednisolone does not have good systemic penetration so it has more of the anti-inflammatory effects of it without the immunosuppressive part of it. If the ulcer doesn't seem to be healing fast enough you should take Spike back to your vet, they should prepare some serum to put in his eye every 2-3 hours (serum is prepared from whole blood, it can be from your dog or from another dog). serum is considered the best non invasive treatment for eye ulcers.

Poor girl. In uncomplicated cases of an eye ulcer the pet normally starts to improve significantly after 7 days. I would have her seen again my your vet soon. The eye ulcer this time around may be deeper or perhaps even resistant to the antibiotic. Sometimes pets also require surgical procedures on the eye to get the ulcer to heal. Unfortunately eye pain can be difficult to treat - oral medications sometimes don’t seem to make much difference. There is some evidence that tramadol is not metabolized well in dogs so I think gabapentin might be a reasonable alternative. Ultimately healing the ulcer will be most important - if it does not seem to be healing well you may need to see a specialist to have a burr procedure or keratotomy in order for it to heal. Topical pain medication might be another option but can sometimes slow the healing process.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! If Brian is under Veterinary care and is receiving antibiotic eye drops prescribed by your vet then the ulcer should heal. Most uncomplicated ulcers heal with in 5-7 days. You should recheck with your Vet to be sure it has healed. I do not think cold air caused the ulcer or will make it worse. Dust, running into branches or other plant material may have caused the original injury so I would leash walk him and don't leave him outdoors long unsupervised until the eye has healed. It looks like Dylan may have a melting ulcer or a descemetocoele, which is a serious problem that can result in loss of the eye. I would take him to your veterinarian right away as this would constitute an ocular emergency.
