Why does my dog have an eye sore and scab? Is it an abscessed tooth?

Poor Troubles! A tooth root abscess can be a difficult thing to get rid of. I would see your vet as he likely needs oral antibiotics and pain meds. He will also need that tooth extracted as usually the abscess will continue to come back and never completely heal until that tooth is removed. I hope this helps!

I believe this is likely a tooth root abscess which could explain why it got better initially and now he worsen again as the main issue such as what is causing the abscess needs to be addressed as well. It is possible that it is associated with some type of cancer, especially if you can see a mass. It could also be caused by a tooth infection. Your vet could do a dental cleaning with x-rays to evaluate his teeth and see if any are infected teeth that need to be extracted. He may need to stay on an antibiotic for an extended period of time to clear the infection. Your vet could also culture the drainage to make sure he is on the correct antibiotic.

This could be a skin infection caused by a fungus or bacteria or and old injury or bite and in worst case scenario it could be a tumor. Please have this examined by your veterinarian. If he suspects a tumor, he will likely want to remove it and send it in to determine whether it is malignant and your dog needs further treatment. If it is an infection your dog may need an antifungal or antibiotic ointment. It may just be a scab from an old wound and might need no treatment. Your vet will be able to determine that with a hands-on exam.

I'm glad to hear that you are having a dental and having the extraction performed, this is exactly what she needs. The vet should know to take care of the abscess while they are treating Khloe, but it wouldn't hurt to mention it just in case. She will probably sent home with antibiotics and hopefully a pain medication for the next few days while the infection clears up.

I wouldn't say that you can rule out an abscess, on the contrary, if it got better after antibiotic treatment, it's likely to be a tooth abscess. the antibiotic may solve the problem but you cannot know in advance, you need to finish the antibiotic course and wait a few weeks to see if it comes back or not. if it comes back he will need a dental procedure, and by the way he is nowhere too old for anesthesia, a few weeks ago one of my oldest patients, a cat 23 years of age, went through a small procedure under general anesthesia without any issues.

Antibiotics are essential in a tooth abscess which is causing Mindy to be unwell but as with human tooth abscesses if the problem repeats itself or fails to resolve then removal of the damaged tooth is generally recommended if the pet is healthy enough for a full general anesthetic. If she has other health conditions which make anesthetic more risky then it can become a very difficult balancing act between trying to prevent pain and infection and not causing any undue harm and further complications. You may also arrange a second opinion and a full dental assessment if the pain and infection continues and you do not feel like your concerns are being addressed
