My dog has a lump under her eye. Is it a tooth abscess that needs draining?

Lumps in this area tend to be tooth root abscesses though a foreign body under the skin or in the mouth or a skin tumor are possible. I recommend to have Chance examined by the veterinarian today. Tooth root abscessed require treatment. I hope this helps.

I would add that I think it's unlikely for a tooth root abscess to cause the eye to actually pop out (Proptose) however without definitive treatment the problem (the bulging and the infection) are going to get worse. Having that pocket of infection in the gum will likely cause the bacteria to translocate to the bloodstream, where it could cause other problems, including with the heart and the liver. I would consider seeking another opinion, perhaps of a veterinary dentist. I have anesthetized many, many older dogs for tooth removal, and my personal opinion is that removing diseased teeth is necessary. If Enzo has blood work prior to surgery, and possibly even a chest x-ray to check his heart and lungs, in the hands of a qualified veterinarian who is confident with anesthesia and dentistry he will likely do fine. If you don't have the tooth removed, your only other alternative is using antibiotics in a "pulse" fashion, such as 3 weeks on antibiotics, followed by 1 week off. Clindamycin is sometimes used in this fashion, but again, results are suboptimal and the infection within the root pocket will never completely resolve - it may improve, but it won't resolve.

It should resolve with the treatment described. If not, recheck with your veterinarian. If it is an abscess, it may need to be lanced and drained. You should also confirm the entire tooth and roots has been removed. A bit of tooth root left behind may cause infection.

Poor Ginger! I cannot say for sure without seeing her in person, but this looks like a tooth root abscess. I would continue the warm compresses until you are able to get her seen by your vet. If this is the cause, your vet will likely put her on some antibiotics and also recommend to have the tooth causing the issue to be extracted. I hope this helps and she starts to feel better soon!

Given the location, it could be a tooth root abscess. It isn't an emergency, but is likely uncomfortable. If Dolly is behaving normally, she can probably see her veterinarian in the morning. An oral exam can be done to determine if there is periodontal disease and if so, if it is severe enough to cause an abscess. A complete dental cleaning and possibly extractions may be necessary. If an abscess is ruled out, your veterinarian can perform a fine needle aspirate of the lump to collect samples for pathology. This may provide a diagnosis. Treatment options can be discussed once results are returned.

Hello. Just based on where the lump is located, I would suspect that Rialy has an infected tooth root. The 4th premolar is a common cause of infections that will pop out just under the eye. You can keep the area clean with a little peroxide, but you will need to see your vet on Monday to confirm this. If it is an abscessed tooth, Rialy will be put on antibiotics & probably scheduled for a dental procedure to clean & possibly remove the tooth. He will be fine afterwards. Since we can't look up your previous posts, I don't have all of the information. Is it possible that this new bump is related to a tooth root abscess? I would recommend that you have Kane rechecked with Dr. Pacy and ask about this possibility. If it is an abscessed tooth, it will usually go down with antibiotics but go back up as soon as the antibiotics are finished. The tooth needs to be removed to help heal the abscess. If it isn't an abscess, then it could be a mass that would need a biopsy to diagnose. I am not sure that the lump in your picture is directly related to the eye, since it is quite a distance away, but without being able to examine Kane and his medical history, I cannot be certain.
