My dog has scabs and swelling around her eyes. What's the cause?

Yes, definitely take Lexi into the vet. I would be concerned she could scratched her cornea, which would lead to much large problems. Oscar needs to be examined by the veterinarian today. That swelling most likely indicates an allergic reaction, a deep skin infection or cellulitis. All of these conditions require treatment. Make sure to protect his eyes from any rubbing by having him wear an Elizabethan collar at all times. Rubbing the eye could make things worse. Have him seen quickly. Best of luck.

It is very hard to say what is going on as the eyelids are closed and very swollen. The skin scabs could be self-inflicted wounds from scratching. I suspect Zelda may have bad eye infection, corneal ulcer or allergic reaction to the eyes that got worse because she was scratching the eye. It could be a skin parasite called Demodex - it often shows up in puppies as sores around the eyes. Your vet may want to examine skin scrapes under microscope to check for Demodex tomorrow. For this evening you should clean the eyes with wet cotton buds and make sure Zelda is not trying to scratch the eyes.

From the crusting and redness, it does look like Lexi has an infection in her skin. You could start by doing a compress with warm wet washcloth to soften up and clean the crust away. Then clean the area with an antiseptic like betadine solution (diluted to the color of weak tea) and apply a topical triple antibiotic ointment. Based on where exactly it is, I would put on a cone or even a little t-shirt to stop her from scratching at it. If it doesn't improve or starts to spread, I would definitely recommend taking her to a vet for an exam as they sometimes need to be prescribed oral antibiotics.

It appears to be superficial but I cannot see the rest of the body and if other parts of the body are affected. If this is just isolated to the abdomen and is not worsening, I would try these things first. That lesion could be many things including an abrasion that is healing, a bacterial infection or something like ringworm (which humans can get). That's good that she is not scratching at it. You may monitor it at home. If it is not getting better after a week, if it starts looking worse or if she starts rubbing at it, have Bella examined by the veterinarian.
