Why is my dog's eye still running after conjunctivitis medication?

Without knowing what the medication that was used and not knowing what the diagnosis was from your previous vet, it is difficult to guide you in the right direction. However, if the eyes were treated with an antibiotic and cleared up but are still accumulating thick material, I would recheck with the veterinarian and have the eyes checked for dry eye to see if this is the primary problem. Life long medication is needed if the eyes are diagnosed with dry eye. I hope this helps! Optixcare is an eye ointment that is over the counter that can help with dry eye so if you are unable to get to your vet, you can start with this ointment to see if it makes a difference. She may have an underlying condition like dry eye or allergies that is causing the chronic problems. If so, she may need additional medications to treat the primary problem. Your vet will likely test for tear function (which may be abnormal even though you are seeing tears), look for ulcers, or test the pressure of the eye itself. Good luck and kisses to Jasmine!

Bleu has such pretty eyes!! I would recommend a recheck with your vet now that some of the swelling and redness has resolved. There may be something additional going on that needs to be addressed, or perhaps she needs to receive a different type of eye drops. Be sure and ask your veterinarian to take a close look at Bleu’s eyelids-sometimes, especially in young growing dogs, the lower (and occasionally upper) eyelid can roll onwards and irritate the surface of the eye-This is called entropion and can require surgery to correct. I hope you are able to get Bleu’s eye redness resolved soon!

It is difficult to give advice without actually seeing the eye. You are welcome to post again with a photo if you'd like. That being said, as long as she is not pawing at the eye, scratching at it or squinting then you can probably wait until your vet opens again to take her for a recheck exam. Continue to put the medications in as prescribed. If you are noticing squinting or that the eye is actually bothering her then you need to get her to a vet ASAP for an exam. Hope this helps. This could be due to an eye injury or conditions such as a corneal laceration, corneal ulcer, conjunctivitis, dry eye (also known as KCS), among many other conditions. Since Toby has not improved on his medications, I highly recommend that you have Toby reevaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. They can attempt a different course of therapy or possibly refer you to an eye specialist. Further therapy would be based on the findings. Good luck and best wishes!

However, there are some other diseases that really need a very thorough evaluation of the eye to diagnose. I think that if he has not improved on the current therapy, it may be a good idea to check in with your veterinarian. If they are concerned based on their knowledge of his case, they could consider having you consult with a veterinary ophthalmologist. Although a picture would be essential to determine clinical development, if you think there is no improvement at all, I would recommend to have it checked again immediately. Certain type of corneal ulcers can actually start melting and get worse very rapidly. Different type of antibiotics or treatment may be needed.
