My dog's eye removal wound is constantly leaking. What should I do?

Hello. When an eye is removed, all of the supporting structures should be removed as well, including any and all tear-producing glands. If there is some sort of fluid accumulating, perhaps there was some glandular tissue left behind or some type of infection. It is also important to make sure there is no issue with an abscessed upper tooth. Hello. I would not be annoyed at your veterinarian as things can happen, but it is clear that there needs to be either a treatment change, or the surgery site may need to be reexplored to make sure all infected material was removed. Previcox is a good pain reliever, but gabapentin is much better adjunct to pain management than tramadol. The antibiotic you are using is usually adequate, but your vet may also choose to augment this with something else, like a fluoroquinolone. Under normal circumstances, an eye should not look like this 1 week post surgery. You do need to contact your vet to make them aware of Pearls' condition. Hello and thank you for reaching out to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. I'm sorry to hear about Duke's wound, but you did the right thing by seeking veterinary attention! The pocket of fluid may be what is called a seroma, which is a pocket of sterile (non-infected) fluid that can form under the skin where wounds are present. You can try applying a warm compress to the area for 5-10 minutes at a time, 3-4 times a day. I recommend wetting something like a washcloth with warm water (make sure it isn't too hot - ie it should feel comfortable on your own skin), and holding it gently on Duke's swelling. This warmth may help the fluid dissipate and the swelling go down. I would continue the Carprofen as prescribed, and recommend restricting Duke's activity (no jumping/running/playing) to allow his wound to heal properly. If it is in a location he can reach to lick or scratch, I recommend keeping an elizabethan collar (cone) on him at all times. I hope this is helpful!

Poor Bree! I recommend to call the veterinarian and tell them what you are seeing. The best way to provide the best care for Bree is to keep the veterinarian in the loop and have her examined anytime something seems different. The doctor may want to see Bree again to be safe. It looks like a penrose drain was placed these drains usually stay in 3-5 days. It is normal to see a blood discharge or seriosangenous fluid like it see in the picture. I would monitor the wound for drainage. It should be decreasing each day. If at anytime the patient is lethargic or not eating/drinking I would take him back to the vet to have it checked.

I would say it’s not unreasonable for 4 days post-op but the swelling should be going down rapidly at this point. If it’s not improved by tomorrow, I’d pop in to see the vet who did the surgery to make sure there is not a complication such as seroma or hematoma (fluids or blood pocket). In the mean time, I recommend warm packing for 5-10 minutes 3-4 times daily. To do this, soak a wash cloth in warm water, wring it out, and put it in a plastic bag. Apply gently to the surgery site. Seepage of some clearish fluids may happen and this is just fine. Best wishes to you and Nemi!

I would recommend calling the veterinarian that performed the surgery and discussing this with them. Typically when the eye is removed the lids are sewn shut. If Rarzi does not have an elizabethan collar on they I recommend getting one from your local pet store until you can get him to a veterinarian.
