Why is my dog's eye area puffy, dry, scaly, and losing hair?

It looks like an infection around the eyelid. This can happen if the eye has been excessively moist lately. The other common cause of this hair loss around the eye is a mite known as Demodex. This is normally seen in puppies. Sport looks like he's a senior, so it's less likely, but still possible. The cause of the swelling can usually be identified by a veterinarian. They can look for the mite and treat for infection. The vet will also be able to give medication that will take down the swelling, which is much needed now. For now, it's best if you can flush the area with saline. You can find this at the local pharmacy or supermarket in the eye care section. Flush for 15 seconds twice a day. This will give some relief and help to treat/prevent infection. I recommend taking Sport to the vet within the next few days to keep this from getting worse.

I'm sorry to hear Diesel isn't feeling well. Without seeing him it is hard to say what is causing the periocular hair loss. I would rule out mites (demodex) or an allergy. He could have allergies to anything he is exposed to- weeds, pollens , grasses, dust, foods, insects, etc. I recommend taking him to the vet tomorrow for a skin scrape for mites then discussing allergies. Unfortunately, there is no way for us to tell what it is just by looking at a photo. Many skin issues can look the same to the naked eye. I suggest you have Tuck to the vet for an exam. The most common reasons for something like this would be: mange mites, ringworm, injury/scrape. Of course there are many other things it could. It is not an emergency but get him to the vet for an exam soon.

Oscar needs to be examined by the veterinarian today. That swelling most likely indicates an allergic reaction, a deep skin infection or cellulitis. All of these conditions require treatment. Make sure to protect his eyes from any rubbing by having him wear an Elizabethan collar at all times. Rubbing the eye could make things worse. Have him seen quickly. Best of luck.

That lesion could be many things including an abrasion that is healing, a bacterial infection or something like ringworm (which humans can get). That's good that she is not scratching at it. You may monitor it at home. If it is not getting better after a week, if it starts looking worse or if she starts rubbing at it, have Bella examined by the veterinarian. I am sorry to hear about Daisy! Due to the size of this lesion and the fact that it isn't improving, I would recommend taking Daisy to the vet for examination of this swelling. I would be concerned that we could have a bacterial infection like an abscess, that this could be a spider bite or other insect bite, or possibly even a mass/tumor. The vet can examine the area and may try to aspirate the swelling (use a small needle to remove any fluid present or collect cells that may help identify the cause of the swelling and the best treatment). Hi there and thank you for using pet coach to address your concern. It is difficult to say what the problem could be without pictures but there could be 2 separate problems. There could be an eye infection or trauma to the eye and the skin may habe an infection or some other skin condition. Any time I am dealing with an eye, I usually recommend having a veterinarian examine this to ensure there is nothing serious going on, especially if you are unable to get a good look at the eye itself. I would recommend having your vet check this out just to be on the safe side. For the skin, I would recommend starting a shampoo such as Douxo PS calm shampoo and bathe twice weekly until resolved.
