Why did my dog's eye get darker so quickly? Is it serious?

It is difficult to tell what might be going on in the picture - it looks like Jagger’s cornea might have pigment on it or that his pupil is much larger on one side. The eyes certainly do look different and I think it would be best to have a vet examine his eyes in person to determine what might be going on.

There is increased pigmentation (melanin) deposited on the eye. Pugs can develop pigmentary keratitis, in which a dark film develops over the eye itself. This does not cause any pain and unfortunately there is nothing you can do to make this go away or slow down the progression. If the eye becomes irritated, you can use steroid drops. Something that a vet would need to prescribe Dexter after examining him. I hope this helps! What you're seeing is likely the small blood vessels of the eye and pigmentation of the cornea. This is typically very normal, but if you are concerned you should take Dunbar to the vet for an ocular exam.

While this could be pigmentary keratitis I am concerned that it looks like the pigment may be inside the eye which would mean that an iris cyst or mass would be more likely. I’d recommend having your vet take a look in person. If it is pigmentary keratitis then your vet would look for things that could cause inflammation or irritation of the cornea like dry eye, abnormal eyelashes or an inability to fully close the eye.

Hi there and thank you for using pet coach to address your concern. Previous eye trauma can lead to scar tissue formation on the cornea, which can sometimes become a dark pigment. As long as the eye is not red and Otis does not seem to have eye pain, I would hust monitor this for now. If it becomes larger or new symptoms develop, I would recommend having a veterinarian examine him so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. I do not see anything alarming in these photos. If you are worried the darker pigment on the inside corner of the white part of the eye, that can be normal in some breeds. Corneal hyperpigementation is usually a result of chronic rubbing. It usually causes no problems long term. If you notice any redness or mucoid discharge, or if he does not want to keep eye open, then i would have him check by your vet.

This could be a normal pigment change with age. If you could post a picture that may help identify what exactly is going on. However if his eye is normal, he's not squinting, no tearing, no discharge then it's likely a normal change for him.
