My dog has eye boogers and sneezing. Is it pink eye or allergies?

Handsome boy! He may have allergies from spring pollen or a mild cold. You can give Benadryl to reduce the nasal discharge and itching. There is a section on this website with information and dosages of common over the counter medications that are safe for dogs. if he stops eating, the discharge gets green or he's very lethargic then I would recommend a veterinary exam. Hi, and thanks for your question. That is likely to be due to a mild to moderate respiratory infection and conjunctivitis, probably secondary to an allergy or infection. A check up would be needed to confirm this suspicion and appropriate treatment might include antibiotics and anti-inflammatory eye drops. Corneal injuries must be ruled out as well (just in case). Pawing at the nose could be allergies but it could be that he has something going on inside his mouth. Since he has some eye discharge too I'd say allergies are high on the list. Could just be seasonal allergies and will go away on their own. You can try giving him some Benadryl for a few days to see if the symptoms get better. The dose is 1mg/# of body weight so a 50# dog would get 50mg (2 of the 25mg human capsules). You can give it twice a day. If you do this consistently and there is no change in 4-5 days then you can just stop - that means it's not working. If you notice it's helping you can continue giving it but just be aware that if you give it constantly they often build up a tolerance and then you'll notice it stops working. Hi there! I'm sorry to hear about Winston's eye troubles. Since he was already treated for pink eye, perhaps another visit with his veterinarian to follow up would be a good idea. The doctor can recheck his eyes and make sure the infection hasn't returned. It could also be allergies, and you may need something stronger than benadryl. Other things I could think of in a young dog are viral infections in the respiratory tract that can cause eye discharge to build up. Also, they can sometimes have issues with eye lash hairs growing in the wrong places, and even with the eye lids rolling in. Sometimes these issues get worse as they grow, so may not be obvious initially. I think a follow up vet visit is definitely warranted. I wouldn't worry too much until the veterinarian looks at the eyes and reassesses the situation though. It may be something as simple as needing another round of medication, or even just a stronger allergy medication. Best of luck!

That is pretty significant discharge that Nola has around her eyes. This is likely secondary to an infection (eye or upper respiratory) or even an allergy. It would be best to have Nola examined by a veterinarian because she may need medicated eye drops or even an oral antibiotic to treat the eyes. It's always better to have a dog seen if there are eye issues going on as it can progress to more serious issues quickly. You may use a sterile saline solution to rinse Nola's eyes but I don't think that will resolve the issue. So again, it's really the best idea to have Nola evaluated by your veterinarian. If the pinkness is on the outside of the eye (the skin around eye) and is puffy this could be the start of an allergic reaction to something in the environment, an insect bite or sting, or even a vaccine if any given in the last 24 hours. If this is the case you may notice the swelling progressing and in that case Bella Bear should see a veterinarian right away for injectable medication to help. If the redness is on the outside of the eye itself (the sclera or whites of the eye) this could be due to something irritating that had gotten into the eye or as part of an allergy to something in the environment. If this is the case I would prevent her from rubbing her eyes and you can flush with sterile saline or a lubricating over the counter drop such as genteal. If the pinkness persists or worsens I would have her evaluated by a veterinarian to see if there is a prescription ointment that may help. I don't think this has anything to do with the baby possum.
