Dog eye bleeding with ulcer: Is it an emergency? What should I do?

Hello, if Starsky were to have a corneal ulcer, this is a serious condition that requires immediate treatment by a vet. Most ulcers that are treated promptly improve with basic supportive care such as pain meds, eye drops, and potentially serum drops (your vet may take a blood sample from your dog, spin it down to remove red blood cells, and send the remaining serum with you to be putting drops in Starsky's eye). However, if you postpone his vet visit, the ulcer could get larger and deeper, could even perforate the cornea and cause permanent blindness, or require a corneal graft surgery to heal, or even require complete removal of the eye. It is definitely in the best interest of both Starsky and you (from a financial perspective) to get his eye treated ASAP. Hope this helps!

I would have Benjy seen by a vet immediately. It's very concerning that his eyes are so sore that the are around them is bleeding. The eye is such a delicate and important structure that any problem with them should be considered an emergency. That's because leaving it untreated can lead to vision loss. Benjy needs to see a vet right away to diagnose what is causing the bleeding and his sore eyes so he can be treated. Please take him into an ER vet clinic; if there isn't one in your area, there will be a vet on call for emergencies. It looks like Dylan may have a melting ulcer or a descemetocoele, which is a serious problem that can result in loss of the eye. I would take him to your veterinarian right away as this would constitute an ocular emergency.

If the ulcer doesn't seem to be healing fast enough you should take Spike back to your vet, they should prepare some serum to put in his eye every 2-3 hours (serum is prepared from whole blood, it can be from your dog or from another dog). serum is considered the best non invasive treatment for eye ulcers.

This is a very abnormal looking eye and it appears that your dog has some serious issues with the cornea. The cornea is very cloudy and hazy and the pink lesion looks like a large ulcer on the cornea. This eye is likely chronically dry and lacking in tear production. This eye looks like it is in imminent danger of rupturing. I would recommend that you take your pet to the closest emergency clinic if you are unable to get help from a regular daytime vet right away. Your pet should be seen immediately and it is not a good idea to wait for 7 days. Your pet will likely need multiple prescription eye medications and possibly surgery in order to repair the defect. Please do not try to treat this without a proper diagnosis and proper medication.

Without doing an exam and looking at the eye, it is hard to say what is going on with Spots' eye. If he starts squinting, that is a sign of pain. It's possible there is a wound near the eye that is causing blood to accumulate in the eye. He also could have an ulcer, foreign material in the eye, or even inflammation of the 3rd eyelid. I would recommend you take Spots in to see your vet to see if he needs medication for his eye.

This trauma probably caused a trauma in the anterior chamber and possibly a corneal damage as well. Pain is involved due to the size of pupil and blinking. An immediate check up would be needed as appropriate treatment would include antibiotics and anti-inflammatory eye drops. Corneal injuries must be ruled out as well.
