My female Jack Russell pees when excited. Will spaying help?

Yes, waiting until after the heat cycle is definitely worth considering in any female with urinary control issues. It allows for full hormonal develeopment of the pelvic area and can be beneficial in many cases. It may not help with excited/submissive urination directly but every little helps

Hello. It is usually recommended to have your small breed puppies desexed at 6 months of age. This will ensure she is old enough to have fully developed organs to tolerate the medications and drugs, and also to ensure you desex before her first heat, which will help decrease her risk of cancers in the future. This should subside over time but one thing that may help is having any friends or family that are over to the house completely ignore Pinky until she calms down. You can even have them offer a treat and make her sit and stay to get her to calm down. This will help with the spontaneous urination due to excitation. I hope this helps! Carly sure is a cutie! If you notice that she is urinating unconsciously, such as in her sleep or when in a deep state of relaxation, then I would recommend to have her seen by the veterinarian. Otherwise dogs will submissively urinate. Building her confidence through a training routine, keeping her on a routine every day and daily exercise that will tire her out are all things that can help. Additionally, try to keep the environment as calm and relaxed as possible. Playing classical music, and not creating a big excitement around coming or going can help her to feel more calm. You could also seek out the assistance of a professional trainer who can watch the behavior and give you further exercises to help her confidence. This sounds more like submissive urinating that you are seeing with Molly. Molly is likely a little fearful, anxious or overly excited when meeting strangers and then this results in her urinating. This is not likely an incontinence issue. As Molly gets more used to these interactions I suspect she will be less likely to submissively urinate. Delaying spaying can help with incontinence issues when female dogs are older but is not likely to help with Molly's submissive urination. Although not very common in male dogs, urinary tract infections can still occur in males. Primary urinary incontinence can occur in males, although more common in spayed females. I would recommend having a veterinarian examine Stanley and test his urine to see if there is any evidence of a bacterial infection. If the urine is normal, then I would recommend having his blood tested to see if there are any abnormalities. If blood results are within the normal ranges, I would then recommend doing a trial of a urinary incontinence medication. I hope this helps guide you in the right direction! What he's doing is probably submissive urination. He sees you as an authority figure, or someone he's very happy to see and urinates. Submissive urination is normal canine communication. When a dog submissively urinates, he’s trying to convey that he’s not a threat. Dogs who submissively urinate usually do so when greeting people or animals, during exciting events, while playing, during physical contact, such as petting, or when scolded or punished. When in a situation that seems to trigger submissive urination, a dog will tend to display submissive postures, such as cowering, lowering the body, raising the front paws, tucking the tail, flattening the ears back, licking the lips or displaying a submissive grin. Submissive urination is most common in puppies, but some adult dogs submissively urinate as well, especially those who seem to lack confidence. The following suggestions might help you manage, minimize or stop the behavior. If possible, greet him outside. Toss a handful of small treats or a few favorite toys in his direction as he runs up to greet you. Ignore him when you first come home and walk through the door. Wait until he has completely calmed down before interacting with him. When you finally greet your dog, do so calmly. Look off to the side instead of straight at him. Sit on the floor or squat down—and avoid looming over your dog as you bend toward him. Teach your dog to perform a behavior, such as sit, when he greets people. First, practice the sit behavior outside of the greeting context, in a calm place, without other people around. When you pet your dog, touch him under the chin or chest, rather than on top of his head or ears. Keep play sessions with him low-key and play games with him that focus on toys rather than bodily contact.
