My dog pees when sleeping or picked up. Should I worry or call vet?

Pet's info: Dog | Jack Russell Terrier | Female | spayed | 12.3 lbs

I have a 5 to 8 year old Jack Russell, I adopted on 26 Oct. 2018. She was scared when I first brought her home. She would wet every where, and trembling. Now she still trembles, but she is slowly coming around. But wets when she sleep or I pick her up. The question I have, is this something I should worry about, and call a Vet. Or do I just need to be a little more patient.

Carly sure is a cutie! If you notice that she is urinating unconsciously, such as in her sleep or when in a deep state of relaxation, then I would recommend to have her seen by the veterinarian. Otherwise dogs will submissively urinate. Building her confidence through a training routine, keeping her on a routine every day and daily exercise that will tire her out are all things that can help. Additionally, try to keep the environment as calm and relaxed as possible. Playing classical music, and not creating a big excitement around coming or going can help her to feel more calm. You could also seek out the assistance of a professional trainer who can watch the behavior and give you further exercises to help her confidence. This is called submissive urination. It would be a good idea to have her seen and rule out an infection, but likely it is behavioral. Avoid eye contact and do not approach her. Allow her to come to you. If you want to call her over kneel down and call her from your side so you are not facing her. Hi, puppies can get urinary tract infections. I would watch her for urinating more frequently and in small amounts. At 7 months, she should be mostly house trained so this is not likely a behavior issue but it is still possible. I would take her to the vet for an exam if it happens a third time. They can put her on some antibiotics for this and she should be fine. Good luck!

A good first step is to make sure Ruby is healthy with a vet check up and to make sure there isn't an illness causing her accidents. Some dogs are nervous urinators, and may do it as a form of "submission" where they indicate they are not going to harm the person. Your boyfriend may want to take things more slowly with Ruby and not pick her up when she is too excited. He can also offer her a treat every time she sees him to help build trust. As for the hiding after an accident in the house. It may be that Ruby knows she has done something unwanted, so is acting guilty to avoid punishment. Working on potty training as if she were a puppy again and rewarding greatly when she goes in the correct spot is best to encourage good behavior without fear of punishment.

It is common for small breed dogs to have disc disease in the neck or back which is excruciatingly painful. His veterinarian will examine and determine if either of these scenarios are possible for him or if he has another problem. In the meantime, keep him quiet and carry him if necessary. Keep in mind that this may be unrelated to the crystals and can even be something like urinary incontinence. I would continue monitoring for signs of painful urination or bloody urine. I recommend that you have him evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Further diagnostics would include abdominal imaging and lab work.
