My dog has a growth on her elbow, but it doesn't bother her. Is it serious?

That's a good size growth. This could be benign or malignant. Any suspicious lumps should be examined by the vet. The vet can perform a test called a fine needle aspirate on it. To do this, the vet sticks a small needle into the lump to get a sample of its cells, and examines the cells on a slide under a microscope. It's usually painless to the animal, and relatively quick to perform. Once the cause of the lump is diagnosed, the vet can discuss treatment options if needed. Hello! This would not worry me too much as it looks suspicious for a benign growth or related to pressure from sitting/laying on his elbow. However the only way to know for sure would be to see it in person and to sample it. If it is recently noticed, I think it would be ok to monitor it for growth or irritation and have it sampled if you have any concerns. I hope this helps!

As long as Georgia doesn't seem bothered by it, I think you could watch it right now. Most dogs who are healthy are able to heal superficial wounds just like humans. If the area starts looking worse or she begins to seem uncomfortable, then have her checked out. If you notice it feels like a mass or tumor, have it checked out. This may be an abscess, cyst or a tumor. You should have it examined by your veterinarian as tumors should be removed ASAP,. An abscess can usually be treated with antibiotics and/or be lanced, and a cyst can be evacuated. Your vet may want to do a fine needle aspirate (he takes some material from the bump with a needle and then looks at it under the microscope) to determine whether the mass is concerning.

This is a benign skin mass that we typically start to see develop in middle aged to older dogs. They do not cause any harm but can become sore and open from time to time. If these masses become infected or are painful I then recommend having them removed, otherwise, monitoring them is absolutely fine to do. I hope this helps! Protect the area from licking or rubbing. Keep it clean and dry. You may apply a tiny dab of organic coconut oil once a day to moisturize it.
