Why does my dog have a dark bump on his elbow after grooming?

Thanks for the image. That could be an area of trauma or irritation. It may also be some localized infection (bacterial or fungal) or maybe a papillomatous growth (wart). If he is licking or chewing at the area, place an e-collar (cone) on him and schedule an exam with your veterinarian. If the spot is not bothering him and he is behaving normally otherwise, you can choose to monitor it at home for rapid change or growth, bleeding, discharge or discomfort. Should any of these symptoms develop, an exam with your veterinarian would be required to definitively diagnose the underlying cause. Any treatment will depend on the diagnosis.

It is not uncommon for larger breeds to develop elbow callouses. Monitor for any licking or chewing of the spots. An e-collar (cone) can be used if necessary to stop licking. Provide a padded bed or beds for him to lay down. Consider adding an essential fatty acid supplement, such as DermCaps or EicosaCaps, to his diet. These may promote healthy skin and coat.

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Rocco. Tough thickened skin can develop on the dog's elbow from laying on rough or abrasive surfaces. So his lesion could be the start of a callus forming. There are, of course, other skin diseases that can have similar looks. It is best for him to see his veterinarian to determine if skin tests are needed and if the lesions are anything to worry about for him. I hope this information helps!

It looks very inflamed. It could be a pressure sore or a reaction to bite. It is at a difficult spot due being a pressure for dogs when they lie down. Try to keep him some padded bedding to help the best you can. I would stop peroxide as it can delay healing at this point. You can try cortisone cream to help with the redness but he might need antibiotics or a different anti inflammatory to clear it up

This could be an mildly infected gland, a cyst or even a benign skin tumor like an adenoma. You could monitor it for any change in size, color, or any discharge or pain. If it has any of those changes Rose needs to get checked out by her veterinarian. I would not apply any ointment to it at this time.

As long as Georgia doesn't seem bothered by it, I think you could watch it right now. Most dogs who are healthy are able to heal superficial wounds just like humans. If the area starts looking worse or she begins to seem uncomfortable, then have her checked out. If you notice it feels like a mass or tumor, have it checked out. Hi there and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to address your concern! From the pictures you have provided, this appears to be what we call a sebaceous adenoma. This is a benign skin mass that we typically start to see develop in middle aged to older dogs. They do not cause any harm but can become sore and open from time to time. If these masses become infected or are painful I then recommend having them removed, otherwise, monitoring them is absolutely fine to do. I hope this helps!
