Is it safe for my dog to eat hot food? What are the potential risks?

Moving forward, after heating her food, stir it well and test it with your finger first before serving it to her. She will be fine! Have a great day!

Food should ideally be fed at room temperature or very slightly heated - be careful heating in the microwave as the centre of the food can become much hotter than the outside and may cause burns. Placing the food bowl into a basin of hot water or heating gently over a radiator etc can help to just take the chill out of food

Ideally you would feed your dog consistently the same dry dog food. Some dogs have a sensitive stomach and switching up food/offering table food can cause stomach upset (vomiting, diarrhea), or can lead to a picky eater. Also some human foods can be toxic to dogs (raisins, grapes, and garlic and onion are not recommended). I would try to stick to a consistent dry dog food for your dog, which will also provide a more complete and balanced source of nutrition.

Yes it is okay to give a cold meal to a new puppy. I would recommend trying to slowly remove the human food and increase the kibble. At such a young age bongo can remember the human food and feeding him this type of food could make his very stubborn as he ages with his eating. Hope that helps

Hello. Yes, they can, but should they? Hot dogs are loaded with fats, sugars & salt & not very nutritious for us or for our pets. An occasional treat or taste is fine, but I have seen too many dogs get hooked on fatty meats & refuse to eat their regular diet. As a result, we see obesity, pancreatitis, organ damage & skin problems. If you want to treat Piper, or use a small piece as a training aid, that is fine, as long as she eats a good balanced dog food diet daily. I would recommend only feeding a well rounded dog food. There is not really any reason to feed human foods. Dogs can actually be very sensitive to lactose. If you have to give human food green beans, peas and sweet potatoes in very small amount can be tried.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! The short answer is no. Their esophagus is more sensitive than ours and also dogs just will not drink it as it does not feel right and they do not really understand why a warm drink is a good idea. Have a good night!
