My Cavalier has ear pain & swollen neck glands. What to do?

Cavaliers are prone to some heritable diseases such as syringomelia and heart disease. Syringomelia is a condition that causes pain and scratching in the neck area, which could be aggravated by turning her on her back. Of course, her problem could have other causes, but the signs are to general to be able to pin point a cause. If she does not improve by tomorrow , or if she deteriorates you need to take her to a veterinarian for an exam.

Usually, face swelling is not a commonly encountered sign of an ear infection so if his face continues to get swollen before tomorrow when you can have him evaluated by your veterinarian, consider having him evaluated tonight to make sure it is not something more concerning than an ear infection. I am sorry to hear about Clyde's recent diagnosis. Swelling of the lymph nodes does not necessarily have anything to do with a heart condition, in fact they are usually unrelated. When you refer to the area below the ear, the closest lymph node I can think of is the set beneath the jaw. If you are seeing swelling elsewhere than this, it might not be related to the lymphatic system. It could be fluid deposit as a result of the heart disease, though this would be a very strange location for fluid accumulation. If the ear has been down since grooming, I would ask the groomer if they possibly could have injured the ear in some way during the grooming session. I would also be curious to know if there is an ear infection brewing, as I have definitely seen dogs keep their ears down as a protective mechanism when they have ear infections. I would try and sniff around Clyde's ear to see if they smell strong, yeasty, or infected. If they do, this could be the problem. If matters are worsening of if Clyde seems uncomfortable at his ear, I would take him back to the vet to get some ear medication.
