My dog's neck is suddenly swollen on one side, but no other symptoms?

There are many possibilities, an absess, blocked salivary gland, insect bite or injury would be the most common causes for rapid swelling. The reduced appetite is a concern, this may be due to discomfort, narrowing of the throat or fever. If this persist or increases overnight he should be checked by your vet, monitor for any changes to his breathing which would require an emergency visit

The cells are then evaluated under the microscope to determine if it is a lymph node, infection, salivary gland or a mass. Based in these results treatment can be recommended if necessary. I would call your veterinarian in the morning and explain that there is a large swelling on his neck. If they are still unable to see him then I would most likely see if there is an emergency veterinarian you can take him too. There is a lot of different things it could be. It is difficult to know the cause without seeing the swelling. Your dog could have an infection, allergic reaction, injury, or a mass causing the swelling. Your dog really needs to be examined by a vet to determine the cause and then treat the problem. Your dog may need an antibiotic, anti-histamine, anti-inflammatory, or other medications to treat.

I am suspicious that he has An abscess (infection). In that location it could be from a tooth, or some sort of trauma or migrating foreign object. I would highly encourage you to have him evaluated by a veterinarian soon. This likely needs antibiotics, and possibly surgery as well. In the meantime I would warm compress the area several times a day. This may encourage the abscess to drain which is what we want. Best of luck and I hope he improves soon.

The swelling can be from an infected or inflamed salivary gland or lymph node. He could also have an abscess from foreign material penetrating the mouth or from the outside, be experiencing an allergic reaction or possibly even have a tooth root abscess. An enlarged lymph node can also be from lymphoma, a type of cancer. Usually though more than one lymph node is swollen if a dog has lymphoma. I hope this helps and I wish Knuckles a speedy recovery!

I see what you mean about Fat Boy's swollen neck. Thank you for providing a picture of it. That could be his lymph nodes that are swollen, and they can swell up due to localized infection or even lymphoma. This is something that should be seen by a vet, and I would recommend taking him into one tomorrow. As for the swelling by the base of his penis, I'm wondering if the swelling is bilateral (on both sides). If it is, then what you are likely seeing is his bulbourethral glands. These are normal parts of a dog's anatomy, and they swell when the dog is excited or aroused. If the swelling is only on one side of his penis, then it could be a cyst or a type of tumor. Again, I would have a vet examine it.
