Dog ear infection: Can coconut oil fix it, or should I see a vet?

For a definitive diagnosis, I would recommend having a veterinarian examine Coco so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. The veterinarian can examine the ear using an otoscope and obtain any waxy debris for analysis if needed in order to help determine what treatment is best for Coco. It sounds like Mike may have an ear infection, which can be caused by yeast, bacteria, or mites. Please do not clean his ears out with coconut oil, it will not help keep them clean. If you want to clean Mike's ear, you should use a dog safe solution such as Epi-Otic. You can get at your vet's office. He will need to see a vet for his ear problems. The vet can diagnose if he does have an ear infection and can treat him for it. Please take him in first thing Monday. It's very important to have any ear problems examined, diagnosed, and treated promptly as leaving it untreated can lead to hearing loss.

Hi, thanks for using PetCoach! Poor Boo! The most common reason for extra moisture and wax build up in the ear is an ear infection. Ear infections are caused by bacteria and/or yeast build up which can be from allergies or just extra moisture. Ideally Boo should see your Vet to have the cause identified and appropriate drops prescribed to get rid of the infection. Ear infections are treated topically in dogs and cats. You can try this ear cleaner. I would clean out the ear every other day for 2 weeks. If there is no improvement or he worsens he should see your Vet. I also attached a video on how to clean the ears. I recommend that you have her evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Your veterinarian would be able to check what type of infection is present and treat accordingly. It looks like your kid has a pretty severe ear infection there. The redness is inflammation and the gray area is thickening of the external ear canal from chronic inflammation. What would be best would be for your pup to be seen by your family vet for an ear exam and cytology. In order to treat this appropriately your vet will need to know if there are bacteria (and what type) or yeast or both in the ear canals and if the eardrum is intact. An anti inflammatory may also be needed because of the thickening. If ear infections are a chronic problem for your pup underlying allergy may also need to be explored. The infection and inflammation is usually deep in the canal, so it is not possible to confirm it without looking into the ear with an otoscope. Please, take her to your local vets as she will likely need a course of antibiotics ear drops to get rid of the infection.

If it is in the ears and they are becoming infected, I would recommend having a veterinarian take a look at the ears so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. If the ears just have a moderate amount of wax in them, you can use an over the counter veterinary product called Zymox otic cleanser. If after using this product for 7 days there is no improvement, I would recommend bringing Pearl to a veterinarian for further treatment. I hope this helps!
