Dog ear itching lessened, no visible signs. Should I still see a vet?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | spayed | 1 year and 7 months old | 30 lbs

My dog was obsessively itching her ears to the point of yelping for several days. We can’t see any visible inflammation in her ears. For the last day or two she has itched her ears much less, so I cancelled her vet appointment for today. Should I have taken her in to get her ears examined anyway? If it was an infection would it have stopped itching? Thank you!

Hello and thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Ellie most likely has ear canals infection. The infection and inflammation is usually deep in the canal, so it is not possible to confirm it without looking into the ear with an otoscope. Please, take her to your local vets as she will likely need a course of antibiotics ear drops to get rid of the infection.
