My Golden Retriever has ear gunk & a scab. Is it an ear infection?

Pet's info: Dog | Golden Retriever | Male | neutered | 2 years old | 60 lbs

Wondering what this zit like infected area is and also the q tips are what came out of his ear, curious if he has an ear infection. He’s a golden retriever. 2 years old.

With that amount of dirt and wax from his ears, it is possible it is ear mites, a bacterial or yeast infection, or just dirt. If there is an odor, any redness or he is shaking or scratching his head, then I would get his ears checked to make sure. The scab may be a pustules from a bite. If it is the only one, then you can apply some cortisone cream and alternate it with Neosporin. If it does not improve over the next 2 days, then it will need to be checked by your regular vet.

Dry skin and scabs on the ears along with itching could be a sign of allergies, an ear infection, some types of mites, or autoimmune diseases. I would recommend having Marley examined by your veterinarian. They will probably perform an otoscopic exam to look inside his ears and might recommend taking a sample to check for mites or secondary skin infection. Your veterinarian might recommend starting an antibiotic if there seems to be evidence of an infection, or might prescribe topical medications.

Shaking is a general sign and can be seen with several things that go from just being cold or nervous to being an indication of pain or discomfort. If Chico is otherwise fine, then it would be ok to monitor him for now. However, if at any point he appears to be in discomfort or stops eating or showing any other concerning symptoms, it may be best to have him evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment. Hopefully it is not anything serious. The scab that he has in his ear is likely a focus of infection or perhaps from a traumatic injury. Sometimes these can resolve on their own and this may be the case with him especially since it already is partially healed with a scab. Good luck and have a good day!

Golden Retriever losing ear hair and scabbing. What can I do?

Lemuiex is adorable! The crusting and scaling on his ear margins could be due to vasculitis or a fungal infection, among others. Scabies does not typically cause this type of lesion on the ear margins, but the only way to determine that is through skin scraping. Vasculitis can be caused by a wide variety of issues, including infection, immune system disorders, drug/vaccine reactions, burns, cancer, among others. Until you take Lemuiex to the vet, you can try applying topical antibacterial/antifungal ointments to this area, but prescription medication is most likely necessary for this type of issue. Golden retriever brown ear discharge: Is it infection or just wax?

Brown ear discharge is not necessarily an ear infection. I recommend cleaning the ears with the cleaner to remove the waxy discharge. As long as the ears don't have a foul odor and are not inflammed or painful that is probably just normal ear wax. If the wax builds up too much then it's more likely to become an infection. With a dog like Wilson with flap ears that cover the ear canal I recommend that you check ears every week and clean the wax if needed. That way you'll know right away if an infection is developing. My dog's ear scab has yellow pus. Is it infected? What should I do?

It is hard for me to tell 100% from those pictures but it looks like that could be a sebaceous growth that had ruptured or an infected lesion. You can try to clip some of the hair away from the area and gently clean the area. A small amount of triple antibiotic ointment may be applied. However, if this area is not resolving in the next few days you will want to see a veterinarian to make sure oral medication is not needed.

Dog's red, itchy, scabby ear: Is it infected or can I use Neosporin?

I would suspect that Augie has an ear infection leading him to itching and rub his eat against the carpet, thus causing the scab you now see. I would take him into the vet today for this problem. Ear infections are caused by ear mites, yeast, or bacteria in dogs, and the cause of the ear infection needs to be diagnosed so he can be prescribed the correct medication. While at the vet, they can treat the scab as well. I would refrain from putting Neosprin on it, you don't want any to get into his ear, it's starting to heal if there is a scab, and it won't do anything to help him if he does have an ear infection. My golden retriever gets frequent ear infections. How can I help?

Go to the pet store and get some routine ear cleaner for dogs. Clean his ears every day and try to get out as much of the waxy debris as possible. This will not clear out the infection but it will help to keep the number of infectious pathogens lower and should bring him some comfort. Don't put anything else in Max's ears. Start him on an oral omega 3 fatty acid supplement for dogs as well, this will act as a natural anti-inflammatory. Lastly, speak with your veterinarian about a food trial to rule out allergies (although Goldens do seem to be prone to infection). Also ask about keeping a medicated cleaner on hand to use on a weekly basis. The medicated cleaners can change the pH of the ears over time and this can help to prevent infections as well. It may be discharge associated with an ear infection (bacterial or fungal) or it may be a waxy discharge which is normal. To diagnose infection, have Grock physically examined by your veterinarian. Swabs of the war can be examined in the clinic to diagnose infection. Your vet can then dispense medication and an ear cleaner if indicated.
