My dog has a bruise on her ear with no bump. Will it heal on its own?

Monitor for redness, discharge, active bleeding or odor. A minor wound may heal on its own. Keep the area clean and dry. Use an e-collar (cone) to prevent scratching or rubbing if necessary. If it doesn't appear to be healing, see your veterinarian for an exam.

Poor girl. This almost looks like an insect bite. Since it isn't bothering her, you can opt to just monitor this area for the next 1-2 weeks to see if it spontaneously regresses (resolves on its own). In the meantime you can clean the area with Betadine diluted 50:50 with warm water daily to keep it from getting infected. If the swelling does not reduce in size or causes any irritation at any point, then it should be looked at by your veterinarian. I hope that Kona's swelling resolves soon! Best wishes and take care.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! From your picture I do not see a wound, it looks like bleeding under the skin or is a bruise. If there is no wound then it doesn't need surgery and the blood should reabsorb like bruises do. If Maya is not acting normal and/or there are other areas of bruising on her body that she see a veterinarian to be sure she doesn't have a platelet or clotting disorder. Now if the ear has a fluidy lump on the ear pinna that is likely a hematoma. Ear hematomas can form from shaking the head and breaking the blood vessels. This is most commonly from an ear infection or ear mites. If she has a lot of dark brown or black wax in the ear and is shaking her head or scratching her ears she should see a Vet. Otherwise there is not much to do besides give it time to go away. I hope this helps and I wish Maya the very best!

It is difficult to envision what this could be based on the description. Perhaps a picture of the area would help here? If you are feeling a bump underneath the skin on the ear itself, then that could be a hematoma, which is caused by shaking of the head and bursting of the ear blood vessel. If you are feeling a bump that is small then it could just be a seroma (mild bleeding under the skin) that was caused by the recent bump on the head. If the area is not bothering Pilot then this is likely a seroma, which will likely resolve on its own. Seroma's that are caused by mild trauma like this will reabsorb within a week in most cases. Applying a cold compress followed by a warm compress for 5 minutes once a day can help this resolve if it is a seroma. If the swelling is the entire ear or a large portion of it and seems to bother Pilot, then its best to take him to your vet for treatment. Best of luck with your pet Pilot moving forward. Take care.

Hi there! Good job warm compressing the area. You can continue that every 5-6 hours for 5 minutes or how ever long Bailey will tolerate it. Continue to monitor the area for any changes in the appearance, increasing in size, drainage, etc. Unfortunately, there is no way to tell if it will heal on its own or require intervention by a veterinarian. It is certainly not wrong to monitor for a couple days before having a vet look at it, as long as things do not appear to be worse. Another important thing is to try to keep Bailey from shaking his head, as this could cause a hematoma and making things worse and require a visit to the vet. Hopefully this helps a bit and Bailey's ear gets better on its own.

That does look to be a mass. A mass is a collection of cells and can be benign (inflammation, cyst, some tumors) or a malignant tumor. Given the age of your dog this may be a histiocytoma, but as many skin tumors can look alike the best plan to confirm this is for your vet to perform a needle aspirate for cytology.
