What is this lump on my dogs ear. At first I thought it was a scab but after returning from vacation it is now grown to a point where I’m worried. It also no longer looks like a scab at all. What could this be and how do I treat it?

Histiocytomas often resolve on their own but it can take a few months and they can be irritating, so if the dog is truly bothered by it then we will sometimes go ahead and surgically remove them. You may consider an e-collar to keep your dog from scratching/bumping it in the hopes that it bleeds less. Topical DMSO which is a liquid is sometimes used to decrease irritation. More information can be found at http://www.veterinarypartner.com/Content.plx?P=A&S=0&C=0&A=1676, but if it is really bothering your dog, removal may be the easiest solution!
