My dog's ear has black crusty buildup. Is it an ear infection?

hello my dog has black stuff around his ear on the outside, and i'm not sure what it is. It is crusty.

This is likely to be caused by an ear infection due to proliferation of Malassezia spp (an yeast infection basically).
I would recommend an immediate check up to confirm this clinical suspicion and treat accordingly. Antibiotics ear drops will be required.

From the pictures, it looks most like Vladimir has some ear discharge crusted in his hair, but I can't conclusively say that it isn't a pigmented mass or polyp. If this is related to ear discharge, he could be experiencing the discharge due to a bacterial or fungal ear infection, or due to ear mites (although mites are not overly common in dogs). Regardless, it would be best to take Vladimir to the vet for evaluation. If it is a mass or polyp, the vet will be able to discuss the best options for removal, whereas if it is discharge, the vet will be able to microscopically examine the debris so that appropriate medications can be started to treat an ear infection. Hi, to me this look like discharge from the ear canal. It would be interesting to have a look st it under the microscope and if possible to have a swab taken from inside the ears to see what if any bacteria or yeast are present and what is the best treatment. Is Ginger scratching his ears ?

Thank you for submitting your question regarding your dog. I am concerned that he has an ear infection. He needs to see his veterinarian. The ears will be examined including deep inside as the dog's ear drum requires a special instrument in order to be visualized. Then a swab will be taken from each ear to be examined under the microscope. This will allow the veterinarian to determine if an infection is in fact present and if so, what medication will be needed to treat it. I hope this information helps!

It looks to me like something more serious could be going on, although it can be difficult to tell from a picture. Sometimes vasculitis can cause discoloration and poor blood flow to the tips of the ears - this would need a biopsy for a definite diagnosis. I would recommend rechecking with your vet.

This presentation could be due to a localized spot of skin infection (likely to be caused by bacteria). This type of skin infection is commonly called hot spot. A check up, appropriate disinfection and antibiotics (oral, topical or in a shampoo formulation) are needed to solve the problem. Disinfection may be started at home with very diluted hibiscrub or betadine or salted water baths. Buster collar may be useful as well to avoid any licking/scratching. Why are my dog's black, crusty ears painful & she's losing fur?

Hi, sorry to hear Baby is having this problem. Her ears looks very infected and need to be treated as soon as possible. She could have a yeast infection that is contributing to this If her ears smell, this is likely the cause. She will need to be on ear medications and possibly oral antibiotics as well. Please take her to your vet when possible, the sooner the better. Good luck!

Without seeing her in person, I can't say what is the cause. I'd take her into a vet today to get this diagnosed and treated. My dog has allergies and dry, crusty ears. Is it an ear infection?

Please do not use Sudocrem, as it contains zinc oxide, which would be toxic if she ingests it. If there is a bacterial or yeast infection present in the ear canal, which may be the case especially if she's shaking her head and scratching, you should have your vet examine her. Some ear solutions and medications can damage the middle and/or inner ear if the eardrum has been damaged. Your vet will likely be able to see the eardrum when he or she uses an otoscope to look in the ears. Sometimes the canal is very swollen and /or has a large amount of debris that prevents us from being able to see the eardrum, but we should always attempt to verify that the eardrum is ok before treating the ear, so as to not damage the middle or inner ear. If she does not seem to be shaking or scratching, it may be just the pinna (ear flap) that is affected, in which case I would recommend you try using [Zymox](https://www.petco.com/shop/en/petcostore/product/zymox-spray-with-5-hydrocortisone), as it may get things cleared up.
