My dog's ears are dark, crusty, painful. Is it more than an infection?

This is likely to be caused by an ear infection due to proliferation of Malassezia spp (an yeast infection basically). It sounds like Gizmo may have a vasculitis on his ears. They are common in small breed dogs, especially Dachshunds. Sometimes the ears can get very crusty and bleed, and it may be in response to an allergy or something else stimulating his immune system (vaccines, for instance). I would have your vet check him out, they may recommend medication and ointment to put on his ears to help them heal. They will likely get better with treatment but sometimes it never entirely goes away. Good luck!

It looks like your kid has a pretty severe ear infection there. The redness is inflammation and the gray area is thickening of the external ear canal from chronic inflammation. What would be best would be for your pup to be seen by your family vet for an ear exam and cytology. In order to treat this appropriately your vet will need to know if there are bacteria (and what type) or yeast or both in the ear canals and if the eardrum is intact. An anti inflammatory may also be needed because of the thickening. If ear infections are a chronic problem for your pup underlying allergy may also need to be explored. IT looks like peanuts ears have an infection present. IT is possible the infection is secondary to allergies or an underlying vasculitis or parasites. I would recommend taking Peanut to the vet for a good exam and to determine the cause of the ear infection. The vet can also provide proper medications to heal the ears. You can try to apply warm compresses to the ears to remove the crust and help decrease inflammation. Also you can start an over the counter anti histamine but a vet visit would be best.

Hi, sorry to hear Baby is having this problem. Her ears looks very infected and need to be treated as soon as possible. She could have a yeast infection that is contributing to this If her ears smell, this is likely the cause. She will need to be on ear medications and possibly oral antibiotics as well.
