Dog dry skin: How often to bathe with new shampoo and lotion?

Hi. I would recommend bathing once every week to every other week. And i would recommend using a good oatmeal based shampoo and conditioner. Your veterinarian most likely has a great shampoo option . In addition, vit E and omega Fatty acids may help as well. These can be found at your local per store. I would not use human products.

The key to using the medicated shampoo is contact time. After lathering, the shampoo needs 10-15 minutes of contact time with the skin/coat before rinsing. The Dechra brand is fine. When there is an active skin issue bathing should be twice a week with using the spray or mousse in between. Once looking better, you can decrease frequency of the products.

Hi there and thank you for using pet coach. Regular lotion is not the best idea because of added chemicals and other products that can harm the skin or dry it out. I recommend using a shampoo such as Douxo PS calm shampoo to help strengthen the skin and prevent dandruff. I also recommend using essential 6 spot on by dermoscent and welactin omega 3 fish oil capsules. I would bathe with the shampoo twice weekly. All of these can be found online quite easily. Generally it's recommended to only bath a dog once a week because bathing can dry out thier skin. But sometimes they need a bath more frequently and that's ok. Use a Mild shampoo (oatmeal) not flea shampoo if she needs more frequent baths.

I wouldn't bathe Griffin again even with a soothing shampoo as that will likely just dry out the skin more. Giving some time for the body's natural oils to return is best. You can use vitamin E or fish oils as a supplement to help with skin dryness, as well as making sure you don't bathe Griffin more than every 2-3 weeks. If he gets dirty in between, pet or baby wipes can remove dirt without irritation to the skin.

You are bathing them quite a lot, dogs coats quickly get stripped of natural oils that help the skin. I would only wash a dog every 2 to 3 months unless they are very smelly or have a skin condition requiring medicated shampoo. You could be damaging their skin barrier.

Bathing too often does lead to the coat drying out. You can try supplement him with fish oil tablets to see if that helps. For every 30 pounds of body weight, give Sherlock 1,000 mg fish oil containing 300 mg of EPA/DHA combined. You can try using a moisturizing shampoo for when he gets really dirty, but if he's not very dirty after a visit to the stables, just rinse him instead of bathing him. Best of luck, I hope this helps!
