My dog has dry skin and hair loss. How often to wash and moisturize?

I would recommend starting with twice a week baths for the next 3 weeks, then you can cut back to once every 2-4 weeks for maintenance of the skin. The lotion can be given as needed : ). I would also recommend oral fish oils formulated for pets given daily. EFA3N is my top recommendation here. Fish oils are a natural anti-inflammatory for the skin. I would advise trying an oatmeal bath to calm his skin, or perhaps a soothing gentle baby shampoo. Then try not to bathe him very frequently. Hi there and thank you for using pet coach. Regular lotion is not the best idea because of added chemicals and other products that can harm the skin or dry it out. I recommend using a shampoo such as Douxo PS calm shampoo to help strengthen the skin and prevent dandruff. I also recommend using essential 6 spot on by dermoscent and welactin omega 3 fish oil capsules. I would bathe with the shampoo twice weekly. All of these can be found online quite easily. You are bathing them quite a lot, dogs coats quickly get stripped of natural oils that help the skin. I would only wash a dog every 2 to 3 months unless they are very smelly or have a skin condition requiring medicated shampoo. You could be damaging their skin barrier.

Use a pet shampoo that is oatmeal based. if you can find the accompanying conditioner, this would help as well. also, start Coco on an omega 3 fatty acid supplement for dogs, this will help improve the skin's health. Please feel free to post any additional questions.

The flakes are most likely the dry skin coming off. You can give him an omega3 fatty acid supplement for sure. You need to use a product made for dogs. Usually maximum one bath every two weeks would be enough to keep her clean. Hypoallergenic (oatmeal) or specific shampoo designed for dogs should be used.
