My puppy is scratching after two baths. How to soothe its skin?

Baby shampoos do tend to be fairly gentle for puppies, but any dog can be sensitive to any shampoo and it’s possible that it caused irritation or dried his skin out more. You may want to see if your vet carries a dog specific shampoo like Dermallay or HyLyt. It is common for young puppies to have dryer skin and act itchy, and most outgrow it within a few months. If he has developed skin wounds I’d recommend rechecking with your vet to make sure he doesn’t have a skin infection or parasites that weren’t obvious on his previous exam.

I would advise trying an oatmeal bath to calm his skin, or perhaps a soothing gentle baby shampoo. Then try not to bathe him very frequently. I would wait 24 hours or so after he was groomed to be bathedagain. This is because frequent bathing can dry out the skin and cause more irritation. If his itching continues after one bath he may have an infection and need to be seen by your veterinarian. You could also try and oatmeal-based shampoo as it can be soothing for itchy skin.

Bathing can strip the coat of its natural oils, so it is best to make sure you are using a shampoo designed for puppies, or one that has aloe or oatmeal in it that can help soothe the skin after a bath. I would recommend bathing him every 2-4 weeks as needed to prevent overdrying of the skin. An oatmeal based puppy shampoo is great to use. Then in between baths you can use puppy wipes which are found at your local pet store. This works wel to my overdry your pet but also keep him smelling fresh. : ) I hope this helps!

Vet's Best has a number of good shampoo formulations to relieve itching. However, it is important to remember that bathing June too frequently will cause further itching of her skin. Also, until the underlying cause of the itching has been addressed (allergies, fleas, ticks, mites etc). June will likely not stop itching regardless of the shampoo being used.
