My 1-year-old dog is dry retching. What could be the problem?

Hello, sorry to hear about Thor! He may be having an incidence of kennel cough. This an infectious cough that typically is not life threatening and resolves within a few days to a week with some medical management. I would have Thor evaluated by your veterinarian to assess if he needs medications.

There are other things that could be causing the retching such as having something lodged in he threat or esophagus. Finally, if he is having a productive fetching with a painful bloated abdomen this could be consistent with a bloat. Both of these would be a medical emergency and warrant immediate attention.

If his retching is severe, please contact your veterinarian immediately.

Why is my dog hacking and gagging like he's trying to throw up?

If Brody exhibits this gagging and retching behavior consistently (without stopping) then I would recommend taking him in to be examined by your veterinarian. If there is something stuck in the throat or the back of the mouth the behavior will be continuous until whatever is stuck is removed. If this behavior is only intermittent and/or only occurred the one time then I would not be too concerned. Brody could have swallowed something wrong or could be suffering from allergies or the beginning of a respiratory infection. I hope this helps. Why is my dog retching like a hairball but acting completely normal?

Hi and thanks for your post on Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! It is good to hear Oliver has been normal otherwise despite this new cough/retch you describe. Sometimes in smaller breed dogs, they can have a collapsing trachea that sounds that retching and may mimic a goose honk. I would have Oliver checked out by his veterinarian soon to determine if this is a collapsing trachea or another something else (such as kennel cough). If it is a collapsing trachea, it can be managed medically or if severe enough, surgical correction is also possible I hope this helps and I wish you and Oliver the best!

Hi there. I'm so sorry to hear about Bella's troubles. Wretching in Bella's case can be caused by a handful of things. She could have an infection of some kind, or have eaten something rotten or toxic. She could have ingested a piece of blanket or toy if she is the type to chew up those things. Bella could also be hacking or coughing so hard it looks like wretching. If she was recently around other dogs, she may have picked up a respiratory bug. I would have Bella checked out just to make sure nothing serious is going on. It may just be some mild that needs some medication, but it could also be something serious starting like coming from an infection or a blockage.

Why is my puppy dry heaving and coughing when excited or playing?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! It sounds like Achilles may have a respiratory infection called kennel cough (or tracheobronchitis). It is like a cold with a cough humans get and causes a tickle in the throat and dry heaving type behavior. I recommend taking him to a vet for a confirmation. They may need to take a xray of his chest to make sure its not pneumonia or something stuck in his throat. If it is kennel cough, he needs medications to prevent pneumonia and to help his cough.
