My dog is retching but not throwing up. Should I be worried?

Hello, I am so sorry for your concerns about Louis vomiting. If he is continuing to vomit, or is continuously retching, then yes, he should be seen by his veterinarian. But if he is quiet, then you can rest his stomach for about 12 hours. Then introduce a bland diet of 25% boiled, skinless chicken & 75% boiled white rice. If Louis is hungry, only give him a tablespoon or two every hour or so. Continue this for a day, then transition him back to his regular diet. If he refuses all food, or continues to vomit after eating &/or drinking, please have Louis evaluated. I hope he is feeling better soon. Take care.

Hello, sorry to hear about Thor! He may be having an incidence of kennel cough. This an infectious cough that typically is not life threatening and resolves within a few days to a week with some medical management. I would have Thor evaluated by your veterinarian to assess if he needs medications. There are other things that could be causing the retching such as having something lodged in he threat or esophagus. Finally, if he is having a productive fetching with a painful bloated abdomen this could be consistent with a bloat. Both of these would be a medical emergency and warrant immediate attention. As long as she is acting ok you could monitor her for additional signs. If she starts retching, seems uncomfortable, starts drooling, is painful, or the distension persists then she should be examined by a vet. Your vet can take an X-ray to evaluate her abdomen and determine the exact cause of her problem.

Non-productive retching (ie. trying to vomit without bringing anything up) can be a sign of a life threatening emergency. This can occur in cases of GDV (where the stomach enlarges and twists). In this case, his belly may be large or firm to your touch. Pacing tends to indicate pain and anxiety. His breed is prone to this condition. Hi, if the retching has ceased after those 10 seconds and after Piper brought up that little bit of bile I would not worry about a possible Bloat/GDV. With bloat and gastric torsion, normally they are unable to settle, pacing around distressed and on and off retching unproductively. They are salivating, and looking very distressed. As time goes by, the tummy becomes swollen but this is not always visible until things have progressed quite a bit. Hope this helps ! I would wait and keep an eye on her, if she vomits/ retches again within the next hour, have her checked over so she could have some medications to help her and make her feel better ! If she should look distressed, panting, and pacing I would have her checked over right away.

If she has a habit of eating anything laying on the floor, it could be she ate something causing this behavior. Because this has been going on for two nights, it's time to see the vet. Sometimes a loud productive cough like kennel cough can look really similar to vomiting in dogs do that’s one possibility. Tessie also may have retched once due to nausea if she ate something that she shouldn’t. If it doesn’t happen again I wouldn’t worry about it. If she continues or if she begins to vomit or cough I’d recommend seeing your vet.
