Why is my puppy hacking and dry heaving, even after drinking?

It is like a cold with a cough humans get and causes a tickle in the throat and dry heaving type behavior. I recommend taking him to a vet for a confirmation. They may need to take a xray of his chest to make sure its not pneumonia or something stuck in his throat. If it is kennel cough, he needs medications to prevent pneumonia and to help his cough. Hello! Sometimes coughing sounds a lot like dry heaving, so it is possible that Otis might be coughing! If so, there are infectious coughs (such as kennel cough), that might be causing the trouble. Or, there could be something irritating his throat. GDV (gastric dilation/volvulus) is the classic cause of dry heaving, but since Otis is playing and eating, this is next to impossible! My recommendation would be, that if this continues, particularly if he is becoming lethargic or losing his appetite, he should ideally be checked by his vet! In the meantime, probably best to isolate him from other dogs, in case he has a contagious cough! Best of luck with Otis!

Poor Jax. He likely had Kennel cough (upper respiratory infection). His cough is productive and poses risk for traveling lower in the airway causing further complications, so it is imperative you get Jax seen by your vet and placed on a short course of antibiotics to clear things up right away. This is the only effective treatment for Kennel Cough in dogs.

Since the coughing has not resolved on it's own, he may require a medication. In the meantime, encourage him to continue to eat and drink. This sounds like he may have an upper respiratory condition. This could be something as common as kennel cough, especially if you take Bakster to dog parks or if he has contact with other dogs. Usually, kennel cough is self-limiting, ie goes away within 3-4 weeks without treatment. It is caused by a number of different virusesw and bacteria, the most well-known being Bordetella bronchiseptica. Treatment is only necessary if the coughing get s excessive, and/or Bakster gets a fever or otherwise appears ill. You should take Bakster to a vet for an exam if he shows any signs of breathing problems, lethargy, not eating and/or drinking. Treatment for upper respiratory disease consists of cough medicine and antibiotics if indicated.

There are a few things that come to mind for causes of Dory's symptoms: the more common reason is kennel cough, which is a tracheal cough from bacterial or viral infections. The cough is "goose honk" like and is worse at night and with activity. The dog usually eats and drinks. The cough can trigger the gag reflex which causes the dog to make a gagging sound and motion that sometimes is productive. Dogs can get kennel cough from boarding, grooming, doggie day care, dog parks, playing with other dogs or even from us if we were around a coughing dog. The other possibility is she ate something that irritated her esophagus like a raw hide. I would have her seen by your Vet Wednesday. Most vets treat kennel cough with antibiotics and anti-cough medication. It usually resolves with in 2 weeks. I wish you and Dory the best!
