Why is my dog hacking and gagging like he's trying to throw up?

Pet's info: Dog | Labrador Retriever | Male | neutered | 9 months and 12 days old | 65 lbs

Since last night, my dog has been coughing and then gagging. He's had kennel cough before but this seems different to me. I suppose it's more of a hack then a cough, followed with him lurching his back and gagging as if he's about to throw up. When it happened last night, my mom and I just thought he got really excited and swallowed his saliva wrong. I tried to check his mouth but couldn't see anything physically lodged in there. If Brody exhibits this gagging and retching behavior consistently (without stopping) then I would recommend taking him in to be examined by your veterinarian. If there is something stuck in the throat or the back of the mouth the behavior will be continuous until whatever is stuck is removed.

If this behavior is only intermittent and/or only occurred the one time then I would not be too concerned. Brody could have swallowed something wrong or could be suffering from allergies or the beginning of a respiratory infection.

Hello, sorry to hear about Donte, it sounds like he may have a dry cough. Most often this is associated with kennel cough (tracheobronchitis). Multiple causes for this diseases, however, the most common is an infection with Bordetella which is easily treated with antibiotics. This is an infectious diseases and is most commonly transmitted with direct contact or contact with the environment in places such as dogs parks, boarding facilities, or other facilities where multiple dogs may be found.

Please have Donte evaluated by his primary care veterinarian soon so that he may be treated as recommended. Hope this helps and best of luck.

Hi! Poor Darwin! I'm glad you had him checked out. Sometimes, they look like they are trying to vomit, but are actually coughing. He could have kennel cough, or some other type of cough. Or, something could be caught in his throat.
If he is eating and drinking, and playful, I wouldn't worry too much. But, if he is acting sick, having trouble breathing, or having trouble eating/drinking, or, if the choking sounds continue, I would suggest getting him rechecked at his vet clinic.

It sounds like your dog is suffering from severe coughing, most probably due to an upper respiratory infection also known as kennel cough. this condition usually lasts 2 weeks and resolves without treatment, if the cough is too severe- take him to the vet in order to get checked and your vet will prescribe a course of antibiotics and cough meds.

My dog is gagging and coughing but not throwing up. What should I do?

It sounds like Maximus may have a respiratory infection such as kennel cough, which often causes coughing and gagging without anything coming up. Or, he could be feeling nauseous and trying to vomit - if his stomach is empty, sometimes this gagging can be non-productive. If he is acting normal otherwise and this problem just started today, you can try withholding food for the rest of the day and offering a small amount of plain boiled chicken and rice this evening to help settle his stomach. If this doesn't help, or if he continues to have repeated episodes of coughing or gagging throughout the day, then I would recommend having him examined by a vet - he/she can determine whether Maximus has a respiratory infection or a stomach problem and get him started on appropriate medication to treat it.

My puppy is gagging but not vomiting. Did he swallow something?

Puppies are notorious for swallowing anything that crosses their path. They don't have hands, so they explore everything with their mouths. He may have swallowed something that is stuck, there may even be a piece of string looped around the base of his tongue. Hopefully your vet did a thorough oral examination, including lifting the tongue in order to see underneath. This area is very hard to see and string can hide there very easily. It could be a long human hair that is bothering him. If you find string, thread or hair in his mouth that goes down his throat, DO NOT PULL IT. Same goes for any you may see as he tries to defecate. NEVER pull on any linear foreign body. It could be looped around some soft tissue out of sight and you will cause more damage. Any stringlike material caught around the tongue should be cut with a pair of safety scissors and allowed to go on down. If this happens, let your vet know what is going on and if he develops any other symptoms, such as vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, loss of appetite, get him back in to see your vet right away.

Why is my dog gagging? Could it be kennel cough or something else?

I'm sorry your dog is having this issue. Kennel cough is typically a dry, almost "honking" cough that can produce a white foamy/mucus substance- they can cough so hard it causes a gag reflex. It usually starts at one time of day and then gets worse and more frequent. Do you have other dogs in your home or neighbor dogs that play with your dog? If so, are they gagging or coughing? Kennel cough is very contagious thus can spread to other dogs in close contact. If you are noticing this, I would contact your vet so they can determine if your dog needs an antibiotic. Some other possibilities for what you are noticing are other respiratory infections, allergies and/or a reverse sneeze or there may be something stuck in your dogs throat (like a grass seed or part of a rawhide chew). Also, some dogs can simply drink too fast especially when it's very hot- this can cause some water to go down "the wrong pipe" and then a gag response. If your dog continues to gag or, especially if the gag becomes more frequent or severe, I would take him back to your vet. Your vet can listen to your dog's lungs for sounds of infection and may want to take a chest X-ray as a next step in working this up. I hope your dog feels better soon!

You can try offering him some wet dog food formed into a meatball to see if this helps push anything in his throat along. If the gagging continues or you are ever worried about how well Biko is breathing, I recommend having Biko seen by a veterinarian for an exam. Your vet may recommend chest x-rays to see if Biko has any primary lung issues or reasons for the gagging. I hope this is helpful!

My dog is gagging and threw up grass. Why is he still gagging?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. It sounds like Auggie could have either some nausea or had something caught in his throat. Reasons a dog might vomit or retch (the gagging without producing anything) include eating something new/different, toxin, infection, organ disease, cancer, or other. If he’s just vomited once, pick up the food and water and monitor. Reintroduce water 4 hours after the vomiting episode and a small meal 12 hours after vomiting episode. If Auggie has vomited several times, it’s time to head to the ER clinic. The veterinarian will do a good physical exam and may recommend x-rays and/or bloodwork to help narrow down the cause of the vomiting. They can also treat the nausea and administer fluids for any dehydration that has occurred. Best wishes to you and Auggie!

My dog is hacking and throwing up all night. Should I go to the vet?

Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! The 'hacking' maybe secondary to a cough. A cough be due to numerous causes, these include infections (viral, bacterial, fungal, protozoal), inhaled irritants/chemicals, heart problems, primary inflammation (bronchitis), allergies, and even cancer, amongst others. There is no way you can treat a cough at home. The vomiting could be induced after the coughing episodes or there could be something causing the vomiting such as gastroenteritis or other GI or non GI causes. IN a big dog such as Buddy, something to worry about would with noproductive wretching and 'vomiting' would be Gastric DIlatation and Volvulus (GDV). That is where the stomach flips upon itself and fills with gas and fluid. This is a surgical emergency and could be fatal if not rapidly diagnosed and treated. You should bring Buddy to a veterinarian for evaluation.
