My dog's dry lips are itchy. Is his healing cream safe to lick?

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | 12 years and 4 months old

My dog suffers from allergies, which are now controlled, but, during this dry season, his lips get very dry and itchy. I tried putting a healing cream twice daily (50 mg/g Dexpanthenol + 5 mg/g Chlorhexidine) that his vet recommended for other skin problems he had in the past. Although he licks it right after I put it, some cream must stay, because his lips heal completely after a few days. However, I'm now worried that he licking and ingesting the cream may be harmful. Should I stop putting it?

You should speak with your vet as to whether this is suitable for use in or around his mouth. There are similar preparations such as dentisept which are designed specifically for dental and lip fold lesions and may be an alternative if required

There is no cream recommend to be put in a spot near his lip since he will just lick it off. If there are sores on his body you can alternate antibiotic cream such as neosporin with cortisone cream. You can also give him a good bath to help the skin. Poor guy! Your can try this: It won’t hurt him if he licks it off. However, if it’s not improving in 5 days or so, I would recommend that you schedule a recheck with your vet. My dog's lips are raw and sore. What home remedies can I use?

Dogs like Lou can be prone to irritation on their lips due to the heavy jowls and moisture. You can try applying a very think layer of coconut oil on the area and rubbing it in well once to twice daily. The only issue is that he may lick it off! If this does not cause it to look significantly improved within the next 5-7 days, I would recommend to make an appointment with his veterinarian who might recommend systemic medications. Any topical product you apply will promptly be licked off. This could be localized infection or inflammation. An allergic reaction or mass cannot be ruled out by image alone. Legally, we are prohibited from telling to medicate the spot in the absence of a physical exam. Ideally, Lana should be physically examined by your veterinarian for a firm diagnosis. She may need systemic treatment as opposed to topical. In the meantime, place an e-collar (cone) on her to prevent pawing or rubbing. Keep the area as clean and dry as possible. Wipe her mouth after she drinks or eats.

You can try cleansing with some diluted betadine or chlorhexidine (Hibiclens) solution. Try not to get any in his mouth. Keep the areas as dry as possible. Any ointment applied will likely get licked off. have your veterinarian examine Benny if daily cleansing does not improve the inflammation. If you use plastic bowls for his food and water, consider switching to ceramic or stainless steel. Plastics have been implicated with allergic reactions.

Sometimes just wiping with a warm wet cloth and drying thoroughly once per day can help with a moist dermatitis.
